I can connect my Xbox to my PC to FTP perfectly with my Router, but then I have to run a long cable across my living room to the den, so I thought I'd get a Crossover Cable to hook up the Xbox directly to the PC so I could FTP without the long cable going through the rooms.
But, now when I start FlashFXP it can't connect, it just times out.
Can anyone help me here? I'm a total Network noob, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

whats the XBOX's new IP address? are you still trying to connect to the address the router is assigning via DHCP?

No, I'm not still trying to connect to the address the router was assigning via DHCP.
I don't know the Xbox's new IP address. I'm at the Unleashed-X Dashboard and it says IP: 0.0.0.0
When I go into the Network Settings of the Unleashed-X Dashboard this is what I see:
Current IP: 0.0.0.0
Type: DHCP
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS 1: 192.168.0.1
DNS 2: 0.0.0.0
FTP Server: Enabled
User: xbox
Pass: xbox
Port: 21
Also, how do I find the IP address of my PC?
Thanks.

If the IP is set to DHCP and you dont have a DHCP Server on your PC it will not work. Set the XBOX static or connect it to a router or clark connect box or something similar that will allow you to assign an IP to a specific MAC Address.
If it is DHCP and you dont have DHCP Server on the PC the XBOX wont have an IP at all, cant get one unless there is a server to give it one.

start > run > type cmd
type: ipconfig in the cmd window to find your IP.

OK. I set the Xbox to Static and it gave me an IP Adress of 192.168.0.100, but when I launch FlashFXP it still won't connect saying "Connection failed No route to Host"
Does this mean that the problem lies on the PC side? Any ideas on how to get it working? Thanks.

you sure you have a cross over cable?

you sure you have a cross over cable?
That's what I was thinking. I bought it from eBay and it just came in a plastic bag. No wording or nothing on the bag. The auction title and description said it was for a Crossover Cable.
How can I tell the difference between a Crossover Cable and a regular Ethernet Cable? The ends look kinda the same to me. Thanks.
-
The ends on a regular ethernet cable are wired the same on both sides. The ends on a crossover cable are differently wired on each side.
Ethernet cable:

Crossover cable

It's better to get like 100' of wire and make your own cables IMO.

OK. I do have a Crossover Cable.
When I turn on the Xbox with the Crossover Cable connected to the Ethernet jack on my PC, the Network icon in the Task Bar goes from "Local Area Connection a Network Cable is Unplugged" to "Acquiring Network Address" and then just times out saying "Local Area Connection has Limited or No Connectivity"
And then when I launch FlashFXP, it won't connect saying "Connection failed No Route to Host"
So, any ideas on what's going wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks.

assign your PC a network address like 169.254.0.1 and assign the xbox 169.254.0.2 then try to connect.
I think maybe APIPA addresses might be the answer. I never had that kinda problem with a Xovercable, so I'm sorta winging it.

What dash?
Change your Xbox Ip address to 10.0.0.10 then change your PC to 10.0.0.1
No gateway IP address. No router, no DHCP.
Ping your Xbox if you do not get a response - disable your firewall.
Try again.
Two possible problems:
1 Your cable is kak (have a break somewhere). Get a new cable.
2 Your OS has something inside which is interfering. [I had the same problem after uninstalling Norton]
Good Luck

"What dash?"
The Dash is Unleashed-X.

How do I do this?
Thanks, guys.

go to IP settings in the dash and change the static one. For the PC, go to your adapter properties and assign an IP. Just be sure to change the PC back when youre done so you can get online again.

As I said in the first post, I'm a total Network noob, so how exactly do I "go to your adapter properties and assign an IP"
Thanks.

What OS? you could try google, but I can explain it pretty easily
the gist is control panel, network connections, right click the adapter, properties, highlight TCP/IP hit properties then change the IP

Windows XP.

Once you change this on your computer you will no longer be able to use the computer to connect to your router through the same network adapter until you've undone all this.
An easier way is just click start, run, type "cmd" , hit OK. Now you're at a command prompt. type "ipconfig" and hit enter. This will tell you your PC's IP address. Now you just have to assign the Xbox an IP address on the same network, which means that the first three sections of the IP address must be identical. So:
if your PC's IP address is 192.168.0.5, assign the Xbox 192.168.0.6
if your PC's IP address is 192.168.1.10, assign the Xbox 192.168.1.11
if your PC's IP address is 10.0.0.100, assign the Xbox 10.0.0.200
The only numbers that should be different are the ones after the last decimal point, and they can be anything between 1 and 255. All the other numbers should match exactly between the Xbox IP address and the PC IP address.
The only way this won't work is if, when you type "cmd" at the command prompt on the PC, it tells you that your address is 0.0.0.0, in which case you will need to assign a static address to both the PC and the Xbox. In that case Malenko's instructions will probably get you there. Here are some more complete instructions, with pictures. (http://www.hotcomm.com/faq/faq_staticipxp.asp)

Im afriad the autosense will remove his DHCP addy, hence my instructions

Thanks again guys for all the help. Very much appreciated.
If I can't get it to work, I'm just going to use my router.
Will I be able to use the Crossover cable just like a regular Ethernet cable to connect my PC to my Router/Cable Modem?
-
Likely yes, but likely no. It depends whether the ports on your router are auto-sensing. You'll know immediately when you plug your device in. If the lights on the PC's network card and on the router light up when you plug it in, you're good to go. I don't know whether auto-sensing ports are common on consumer-level routers. It's been years since I was working with networking equipment on a daily basis.
-
Auto-sensing is common on almost any consumer network hardware made now. However the Xbox 1 is NOT autosensing, the 360 is. Most of my stuff is wired on crossover cables just because I got like 10 Xbox1 'System Link' cables at 79 cents each. They're 25 feet long and router and switch are autosensing so they can work like straight cables.
But yeah my WRT54GL and my old 8 port Dlink switch are both autosensing and that Dlink is from like 2002.

Any luck with this yet?

No. I'm just going to use my Router for my FTP'ing needs.
Thanks for all the help though.
