Title: Watchmen 8-bit
Post by: Rick on September 02, 2010, 10:12:16 am
Ok, I know the movie "Watchmen" came out years ago, and there were a few threads where it was mention, and yes, there's a very bad video game out now.  This is not that game.  It's a fun little punch-em-up that they made to promote the movie, and it's cute for any fans of the original work.

I had fun wasting 5 minutes playing this.

You mean last year? That was forever ago...

Yeah, that.  I'm saddened by the fact that one of my favourite movies of all time seemed to die out in popularity shortly after its release.

I loved it. Saw it the first day it was out. I'll buy the ultimate cut version sooner or later.

My wife didn't like it because she felt like you had to read it first to completely understand it. I could tell while watching it that if I hadn't have read it, I would've been a little lost at times as well.

Awesome movie.  I have the Ultimate Cut, but haven't gotten around to watching it.  Somehow, I can't piece together 3 1/2 hours of "me time" these days.

 ;)

You got your Wife to watch it?  You're lucky.  My Wife (who's not a movie fan by any stretch) sat through a bit of it one night (she was already tired) and then we got just past the Comedian/Silk Spectre I scene when she fell asleep.  Unfortunately, since that scene was one of the last ones she remembers, it's stuck in her mind, and I haven't been able to coax her back.

We took a whole group of people to the movies to see it.

The best thing about Watchmen the movie, was the trailer.

I agree. The movie does have problems, and the main trailer was far better than the actual movie.

I never got to see it. I wanted to though. My girfriend loves movies, but it seems like she hasnt seen too many of them. Watchmen is definitely one of them. I remember the trailer being cool though. I think its on HBO, Ill check it out since you guys think it is worth watching.

Totally bizarre marketing on this one.  The director was blathering before the movie hit theaters that there was already an extended and ultimate cut coming out within 6 months of theatrical release.  Then everyone was mystified it was a theater flop.  Well, gee.

If you know about the mythos, then you know why this happened.  The movie was talked about to be a two-parter, then how they were going to mix it down to a single epic film, while keeping all the fans and non-fans happy.  The movie could have easily spanned multiple films, but the way they did it was very respectable to the original source material, imho.  (IMHO.)  The "extended cut" was much better than the original film version (see; "director's cut", it's not that unheard of) and the "ultimate cut" has another complete movie interspersed with the original film, so that fans of the source would get what they wanted from the movie.

It wasn't necessarily a theatre flop, although it reportedly grossed $107M+ with an estimated budget of $120M-$130M, however, the bank is in when it comes to marketing after the fact.  DVD and merchandise sales and such are certain to continue for years.

This is my favorite graphic novel, and basically what turned me on to reading them.
I have very mixed feelings on the movie. To go to such lengths to capture the look of the novel (there are places where you can pause the DVD and the scene matches up to a frame in the book), and then change up the ending was just beyond me.

I mean, they trusted the novel enough to make the movie mimic it near exactly, but then change up the actual story to frame up one of the key characters? Really stupid.

The budget was $130 million, and you forgot to include the foreign grosses. It made $185 million worldwide.

Sweet.  Not the amazing success I hoped it would be, but I personally wouldn't turn down $55 million dollars.

Minus however much they spent on marketing, which was quite a bit. Still, a good haul.

I never tried it. It took too long to just get on with the game, and I'm at work.

It'd have been worth 2 minutes if they used Sean Connery's character.
