Next up is my Elevator Action cab (in a factory converted (I believe) Jungle Hunt cabinet)...
I've already bought the stencils and the paint. I still need to acquire a nice CPO... which I'm having difficulty sourcing one...
-
Which board are you using ?
I vaguely recall an emulator-based board with an SD card being available some years ago and wondered if it was the same card that Hanaho (?) had been working on.

That would be the one. The cabinet has a working Elevator Action boardset on the door too... just disconnected. I'll leave it in there to convert back if I ever want to...
-
This board you are using... is it one you have had for a while or recently picked up? (Looking for one myself)

I picked it up about 3-4 months ago. Nix over at KLOV had some for sale. I know that he's got a list of folks looking still ...and he's out of stock.
-
Ya, I think I'm on that list as well. Thinking of just putting a mame comp in mine with the same plus 1 or 2 more games that are on that board. :dunno
-
What games are on that board?
Are you going to go with a standard Taito paint job our use some unique color combination?

I'm going with Brown/Tan ... gunna make it look like an Elevator Action.
I need a CPO though... it looks like inkjet is the way I am going to have to go. That or Willis NOS...which isn't bad.
Games... there is 20...
Lessee what I can remember...
Jungle Hunt
Zoo Keeper
Elevator Action
Arkanoid
Arkanoid Returns (yes... they suck with a stick)
Qix
Super Qix
Rastan
Nastar
Puzzle Bobble
Bubble Bobble
Liquid Kids
Rainbow Islands
Rainbow Islands Remix
Chack n Pop
Lunar Rescue
Space Invaders
Space Invaders DX
Return of the Invaders
The New Zealand Story
(had to look it up for the last 3)...

:applaud:
Good call. Out of all the Taito cab paint-jobs, I think the Elevator Action one looks the most appealing. Nice retro colours.

Attaboy! I think that looks better for that particular game. As we've seen before.
-
OPINIONS:
It's apparent that it's going to be nearly impossibly to source a silkscreened original CPO... inkjet would be my only option...
...alternatively QuarterArcade has these nifty "Spy Agent" CPO's... "Spy Agent" was a bootleg version of Elevator Action... the CPO actually goes pretty well with the whole theme... but I am not sure.
Here is the the Spy Agent CPO:
Do I go with a silked "Spy Agent" CPO or an inkjet "Elevator Action" original CPO?
(here is how that looks)

-
Decisions decisions eh? Will you be adding extra buttons or joys to support multigame?
-
I say go with the Spy Agent CPO. It's higher in detail, and has nicer colours. ;)
-

Nope... well, aside from 2 loose microswitches in the coin door for volume. EA has 2 buttons which is just right... no dual player Puzzle Bobble action but that is what the Neo-Geo w/Bust-A-Move is for.
:)
-
Tough call. Fortunately mine has just minor cracking and is otherwise nice. I'd probably lean toward the inkjet (without having examined the quality of it). I'm not sure how good the color scheme of the spy agent cpo would go with the rest of the artwork.
Any clue why QA would have done spy agent instead of EA? Perhaps licensing concerns?
-
Color scheme looks very similar to the browns of the original... though I am a little worried about the brick work as it's a different "feel" than the bezel.
www.mamemarquees/www.gameongrafix.com (http://www.mamemarquees/www.gameongrafix.com) is where I'd get the original printed if I go that way. I've always been happy with Scott's product.
-
When I mentioned color scheme, I was specifically thinking of the blue. It may or may not look fine. Just wanted to make sure you give that proper consideration beforehand so you don't regret it after. :)
-
Decision made... product ordered. I went with an original inkjet repro from Scott over at www.gameongrafix.com (http://www.gameongrafix.com)
I'll let you all know how it looks when I get it.
Lets see...
Stencils - check
Paint (brown, tan & black) - check
Control Panel Overlay - check
Leatherette embossed T-Molding - check
I think I'm almost ready. Now to decide if I want to undertake this project BEFORE or AFTER the Xenon pin...
-
Got the inkjet repro from Scott today. It looks good. Colors are good... overall I am happy.
Is it an exact repro? NOPE! There are some errors. Example: There should be a black line around the P1 and P2 guys in the doors... they are not there (as y ou can see in the image above). Also, the black "dots" across the top are lighter on the repro and they go darker than the original as you go down.
Luckily this isn't a 100% restoration so I am fine with the issues. Had I been trying to completely "restore" this cab... I MAY have had an issue... but you get what you pay for when it comes to inkjet.
I can't complain about the quality of the repro, but the original source (the file) needs a little work to be 100%.
I will contact Scott to see if he's interested in learning the differences to fix the file... though he may not be as EA isn't a huge seller I am sure.
-
Yeah, files can be corrected, what's important is quality. Can you tell it's inkjet?

No. Scotts stuff ALWAYS comes out primo... it looks very clean.
-
Small update...
Cab has been stripped... prepped... a primer coat has been sprayed on... black is down and tan is down.
This weekend I will be spraying on the brown stenciling and tan stencil up front.
I didn't take pix of any of the prep or painting as I forgot my camera at home. The work is being done at a friends house along with 4 other cabs (2 blue Nintendo cabs, 1 orange Nintendo cab and a Missile Command).
Here is a stripped shot:

...and here is all the crap that came out of it.

If you look very closely at the PCB stack... you will notice a small PCB sitting on top. Guess what PCB that is...
:D

The paint job looks kickass Frizz! The colours are looking really nice...
Question: Are you working out of the same garage you normally have your games in? If so, where did you store your cabinets?!

Thanks...
...and nope, I am painting at a friends house. We're doing my Taito cabinet, a DKJr cab, a DK cab, a DK2 cab and a Missile Command all at the same time.
:)
-
WOW yeah man kudos on the paint job that looks way slick! excellent choice on the classic color scheme. I have an elevator action 2 cab, I dunno what to do with this damn thing :/
-
...and here is the completed control panel.
The overlay came from gameongrafix... and unfortunately the artwork isn't 100% accurate, but it's close. Too bad there isn't a silk-screened 100% accurate version around. I also put a new centering grommet in the joystick while I had it out and put 4 new buttons on top (I only had 4 new ones...so the 2 front buttons are recycled).

Painting, T-Molding, re-assembly, etc... all complete. I just have to get the insides back in.

That's lookin' gorgeous!
-
Thanks...
Just about there... Everything is installed short of the power supply and PCB. I was too busy watching the Steelers step on their own ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- to get it completed yesterday, but I still threw the CP up to take a couple shots.

That turned out really nice!
-
Wow that looks fantastic. I have my stencils in a tube waiting for spring! If mine comes out half as good as yours did, I will be thrilled :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:
-
I'm working on the exact same restoration at home. Green Taito to Tan/Brown elevator action.
Wished i had bought the CPO from where you did. Mine doesn't have the black on the sides and to top it off it is about an 1/8" short on one side and 1/8" long on the other side when centered with the joystick hole.
Where did you get your centering grommet? Mine is pretty good, but i need to get one for an arcade that i visit. I'm tired of playing on their broken machine.
If mine turns out half as good as yours it will be awesome! The tan/brown i just kind of guessed at. I guess as long as it pleases me that is good.
Great job! :applaud:
-
looking for a grommet as well.
haven't looked very much but i do need one for a qix i'm fixin' up.
-
Wow Frizz - that really came out nice.
I've got a Taito in my garage that I hope to get to this summer - do you think it is possible for a 25" horizontal monitor to fit in there without hanging out of the back? I'm thinking about increasing the size of the screen if possible for playing vertical games on the horizontal monitor...
