Hello all,
I just built up a new Win98 SE system to use for my dedicated MAME cabinet machine. I'm using the Windows command line MAME, along with MAMEWAH v0.954b.
I've configured MAMEWAY for the location of my MAME executable, and also let it find my roms. As well as unzipped layouts.zip correctly.
So basically, everything is setup perfectly.
However, a strange problem when I'm actually in MAMEWAH. It seems for whatever reason, my UP and DOWN keyboard controls are making the game selector move very slow through the list.
Initially, I thought maybe this was due to the "repeat speed" of my keyboard. So I went into my Windows control panel, and increased the repeat speed. Then back into MAMEWAH -- still the same issue.
Now granted, I have the full mame rom set installed -- so we're talking thousands of roms. But I have the same configuration on my WinXP machine, and it the up/down scroll speed in mamewah works just fine.
To further take it out of the equation -- the new Win98 system is a P4 2.4ghz machine, with 512mb of memory. So if you might have been thinking it's an old system and it's a simple slowdown, that's not the case.
Any other ideas??

What would be the suggested value for the change?

just play around till you like it

I dropped it down to 80ms, and it seems to be doing the trick now :) Funny that my WinXP is using the default settings and didn't experience the same problem?
Thanks again for the help!

Are you using a 'navigate' event sound? If so, I believe under Win98 this will slow the scrolling down. In XP this does not occur...

As a matter of fact, I am using the sounds. And just for the heck of it, I fired up my WinXP machine last night after making my post to see the difference. And even with the modified keyboard speed in my MAMEWAH config, the XP install is much more fluid when navigating the game list.
So you're saying this is a Win9x specific problem then?

Basically, yes. I have been told that using sounds in '98 generally slows down operation in MAMEWAH. Not sure why atm, but I will probably have a look into it at some point.
FWIW XP is smoother/quicker than '98 generally in terms of MAMEWAH...
