Title: 14" LED monitor
Post by: jindod on August 25, 2010, 08:17:18 am
Hello there,

a while ago i restored / butchered (depending on opinion) an old moon base cocktail cabinet from the jaws of death and made it into a nice little vertical
mame machine.
plays most of the old vertical games and works swimmingly but, with the PC that's inside it, i didn't have room for a 14" arcade monitor, which is what was rotted inside it originally. so i stuck in a 15inch LCD, it works ok but i've always thought 'it just doesn't have 'that glow' like the good old days'.

anyway, i've also got a mac that has an LED screen, arcade games look amazing on LED because they glow like the good old days.

so, my question is this, do you know of a place in the UK i can get a 14" LED monitor?

the samllest i've found is 26".... and has anyone done this before / noticed the difference?

thanks again

Jindod

lcd/tft might be easier to find as have been around longer.
led units are realatively new to the scene .

and the latest, greatest new gadget is the AMOLED

cheers for the response, i have an LCD in it at the moment, and it won't take a CRT as there's not enough room. i can't even FIND a 14 inch arcade monitor, never mind actually fit it... so i thought LED might be the way to go....

Oops. There's some contradiction in this.
Mac is LCD and your 15 inch is LCD: LCD is LCD. Backlight does not mean ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---! LED is just for Greenpeace. In fact: CCFL backlight LCD's are mostly brighter then LED. And with CCFL you can get wide-gamut, which LED LCD does not offer either (unless it is top-of-the bill +3K RGB led LCD).

You say your iMac glows... That's either because it's brighter (15 inch LCD's are usually a bunch of years old, thus degraded and faded), or because of that MIRROR apple puts in front.
So go ahead, pick any bright LCD and pop glass in front, and it will "glow" as much as your iMac or even better. I have a Acer 2723 27 inch PVA panel in one cab, and that one blows away the new 27 inch iMac I can assure.

Don't look know, you just blew my mind...

so i can just try and find a 14inch led backlit monitor (which may also be hard as no one wants a 14' these days....) cool! you're the man!

i will have a look now.

ps... i was convinced my mac was led...

It is LED, but LED-backlit. Real LED screens are the ones around soccerfields, on facades downtown and stuff like that. Amoled is also led, but that monitor is expensive, only small (phones), not mature (6-bit color) and not reliable yet.
