Title: Anyone else had problems with EMDKAY?
Post by: zallax on August 24, 2010, 09:36:43 am
I ordered a marquee from him on 8/6 and according to his website, it hasn't even shipped yet.  I have sent e-mails, a PM -- no response.  Is he on vacation?  Is this par for the course?

Dunno if he is on vacation, but if you are worried, just call him.

You can reach us by phone at 201-425-1718.

...and by "us", I mean "them".

All the times I scanned his contact page, I never saw the phone number.

Well, I called and left a message.  Hopefully, it proves to be more fruitful.

It's very long, and is well worth looking closely at.

[insert dramatic pause]

Turn off ABP ;)

What sig?

I knew someone would ask this. I can't see it either, but it's there. Like Franco said, ABP blocks it.

Brent finally sent me a response and stated that due to an unexpected business leave he would not be able to ship my marquee until August 30th at the earliest.  Couldn't he notify me of that before ordering or some time during the 18 days I was waiting for the product?

Here's a quick bit of advice -- If you are unable to process orders, change your web site to not accept them.

I am never doing business with him again.  GameOnGrafix expect an order in the near future.

Sorry to hear you were not happy with your experience. Keep in mind this isn't Amazon, and the vendors around here are typically a one or two person operation. They do it for love of the hobby, not for a living. When their lives get in the way, they can't always make sure their business is in order before dealing with it. It's just part of the way things work, and he's not the first vendor to have the real world encroach on the hobby, and you're not the first to complain about it.

Hopefully you'll have better luck with GameOnGrafix, as they are really good (and have also had to put things on hold in the past due to personal issues, but like I say, that's every vendor here).

I only know of one vendor in this hobby who hasn't had a complaint like this at one time or another, and I won't name the vendor to avoid arguments. As said, this is a niche hobby type of business, not a 24x7 chain store or Amazon. Not belittling your experience, you're the customer and if they didn't meet your expectation it's your prerogative to go elsewhere. I'm saying though that in this hobby, most if not all vendors are doing this out of their personal time and things like this will happen, and if you expect otherwise you may be disappointed again.

I understand your points, but an e-mail over a week ago would have been nice so that my project isn't held up.

Here's a quick bit of advice -- if you can find a vendor in this hobby (and, yeah, I see saint's note and I know exactly who he is talking about, although I do know that the vendor in question is behind on delivering a certain item, which is not featured on his web site). It is already clear that you haven't yet bothered to research your purchase because you would have seen the relative disparities in feedback (and I say that with the full intent to purchase from BOTH of them again in the near term).

Most vendors in this hobby are folks like us and have real jobs and lives -- your $20 marquee order ain't making their rent, so lighten up and stop whining.

Im sure that is the case, but if that is the attitude that a vendor has (not saying that EMDKAY is that way or not) then I wouldn't do business with them again either.

I see both sides but I lean to the side of the consumer.  I don't think it's unreasonable for the vendor, after accepting payment, to have timely communication.  Sure, some do this for extra income and provide a service, but others do make their living selling these products.  Maybe not only to the home arcade market, but they do make a living selling these products to us and to other fields.

I don't think it either situation it's asking that much for them to simply say:

"Hey, I received your order.  Thanks for the business. If you need anything, please contact me via email.  Just an FYI that it will take about X number of days to get this out.  Occasionally, I'll have something unexpected happen in real life that may cause a delay.  If this occurs, I will contact you to see if you are comfortable with my time frame to deliver this product.  If you aren't, I will gladly refund your money."

Say what you want about this being a niche market, but when you accept payment for services, you are obligated to deliver the product or timely communication. It's the same with this community, fast food, large corporations or whatever product/market you discuss.  More communication will alleviate the uncertainty and concerns that people have.

You are presuming attitude from a single posting here (most likely the phone call was the first that Craig heard about the problem). Every vendor (with that one exception) has at least the same degree of negative feedback.

There is a reason why I no longer sell anything to folks here, despite having more stock and rare items than some vendors -- it ain't worth my time when some random guy sounds off. I've stopped even offering stuff for free to people who I don't have a history with because people can't be bothered to call to see if I received their emails.

In this particular case, I am curious if the OP sent an email via EMDKAY's website (in which case, there is no excuse for Craig not responding) or if they just did what everybody seems to do and send a couple of emails and maybe a PM that may not be picked up.

It is worth noting that there is a parallel thread going on at KLOV right now where the user was trying to reach GameOnGrafix and Frizz had to point out that Scott probably doesn't check his PMs on KLOV ... flip sides of the same coin.

I replied using the e-mail address with my order.  I used the form on Brent's web site.  I sent a PM.  When I found out there was a phone number, I called it and left a message there.  None of these, I feel should have even been warranted as I feel I should have been contacted if there was unexpected occurrence after payment was received

You are quite right. Hoopz is totally on the money with his statement too. If you're handing your money over upfront, then the vendor has an obligation to let you know if things are going to slip outside of the terms on the website... if there are any. If you are a casual vendor and fulfil orders as and when you can, then you need to be upfront about it. It's not a problem as it's then up to the buyer as they then know the score.

Yes, sometimes something may come up in real life, but it shouldn't really take this long to get a response... and as mentioned, it shouldn't be up to the buyer to chase to find out if there's a problem!

That's my opinion anyway  :)

I guess I get wound up on this topic and should ease up -- it's your money and you have a perfect right to spend it where you want. Sorry for being over the top.

FWIW, I think that saint's commentary about expectations and disappointment is right on the money.
