Title: Damaged Board/ Wiring Question
Post by: mike boss on August 16, 2010, 07:45:08 pm
I picked up a cabinet this week and the marquee says Bad Dudes.
The seller doesn't recall if the board is the same. Looking @ some pics online I think it is.
(Which is awesome, cause along with Narc is one of my favorite games) ........ hey, it is what it is.
Anyway I bought the cabinet for the cabinet the board was just a bonus.
Anyway today I did my investigation of the cabinet. I'm still new to the hobby so forgive me for my novice questions.
I was kinda shocked when I saw how the board harness was doctored up.
When I removed the harness it looked as if the connections on the board themselves were damaged.
I'm guessing perhaps somebody had put the harness on the wrong way ? All be it I have no clue.
Still getting to know JAMMA I found the pinout for Bad Dudes. To me (and sorry for stating the obvious if I'm correct)
it looks as if the GND pins on either side and the +5 pins are damaged. So the technician (I guess) used the wire
to connect the +5 and GND directly from the board to the harness, splicing the ground over to the pins on the end ?

Just looking to see if I sorta grasp what transpired.
I don't have any JAMMA cabinets @ home with the -5 hooked up so I'm unable to test the board.
I'd like to re-purpose the cabinet and make it into a Bad Dudes, however I think I would wire it from scratch with a new harness.
I just would like to make sure I'm seeing this correct and comprehending whats going on. This way I can wire mine up the same way.

Anyway here are the pics :

Sounds like you have the right idea about what's going on there.
Probably had a weak edge connector/harness which causes the pcb connection for the power to burn up a bit, causing even more problems, so they jumpered the +5 and grounds.
Could have been caused by a weak power supply too.

Do yourself a favor and order a new harness and start from scratch.

What cabinet is all of this in ?
(Bad Dudes was a conversion kit)

I did indeed purchase some new Jamma harnesses and was planning to start fresh with this.
Do you suggest I try with the harness as is without making any modifications, then should I get no result jump the wires ?
The cab is just some generic black cab (I'll post a pic later).
It has the marquee, but no monitor. I'm thinking start fresh or perhaps sell it, and just hang onto the board & marquee as I now want to fixate on my DK JR project.

love the duct tape holding the coin door shut and the sharpie CPO.

Part of me always wanted to design a cab that looked like it had been seriously abused for many years but was still build to be structurally sound. Maybe even make the menus and/or wallpaper look like it had bad burn in, but not in game.

$50 each with the boards I thought it was a good price.
The other one has Mr. Do in it.
The idea was/is to MAME them anyway. So some cosmetic work is done.
A lil paint here, a lil there.
