Title: Problem with ArcadeVGA card
Post by: Jareardy on August 15, 2010, 12:27:00 pm
Hey everybody,

Searched through a lot of different forums here and I haven't been able to find anyone that has my similar problem.  I'm trying to hook up an arcadevga card to a wells gardner 25k7191.  Now I know for a fact that the monitor works because I have a golden axe ROTDA jamma board in there and it displays fine.  But when I plug it into my arcadevga card the best picture I am able to get is what you see below.

http://a.imageshack.us/img405/8432/dsc0104yu.jpg (http://a.imageshack.us/img405/8432/dsc0104yu.jpg)

The following is the connection layout I'm using

This link takes you to a diagram that I'm using to connect it to the monitor.

The settings on the vga card are I'm outputting 512x512 at 32 bit color.  Also it is the arcadevga 300 PCIe model.

Need some help here, any ideas?

Did you confirm your wires with a volt ohm meter?   The most important are pins 1 2 and 3 which are RGB and of course the ground and sync.  The colors on your chosen wires do not look like the ones I have seen used in vga cables but of course there are many variations so the continuity test is the only accurate way to go.

vga cable wiring colors (subject to testing) (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/diy-projectors/30458-vga-pinout-wire-colors.html)
Pinouts (http://pinouts.ru/Video/VGA15_pinout.shtml)

Note that pin one is aways on the top row and inset from from pin 6.

Yeah, just did the continuity check and they all register ok.  I'm not supposed to be using the sync ground am I?  Could it be I have it on the wrong refresh rate or the wrong resolution?

Why are you feeding it 512x512.  It is probably out of the range for your arcade monitor.  How about 320x240 as a start. Refresh rate should be 60Hz in N America.

I tried it at that resolution as well after I tested the continuity of the vga cable, still didn't work out.  What about an amp?

You should not need an amp to get a viewable screen.  The jpac provides some amplification of the video signal and some protection but if you are not getting anything it will not help.  All these arcadevga probs all at once.  I guess everyone will have to wait for Andy to get back.

I am not using the JPAC adapter though, just the ArcadeVGA.

Definitely not an expert, but your picture looks like your having horizontal hold issues.

I know that the JPac amplifies the RGB, I'm not sure if it also amplifies the sync signals.  If it does, then that could be your problem!!

The other possibility is that the monitor is expecting positive sync and the AVGA card is outputting negative (or vice versa)  I don't know if you can change the polarity of the AVGA sync or not, like I said I'm definitely not an expert.  I've only used my AVGA card for about an hour in total, using a JPAC and I must admit I was concerned initially, because nothing was showing on the scree at all!

Eventually worked out that I needed to tweak the screen control then I could actually see something!

A fiddle with the voriz/vert size and contrast/focus and everything is sweet!!!  Maybe you need to check the Hriz/Vert hold - but I guess you've already played with them.

Another option is that your monitor doesn't handle the sync frequency you're outputting.  I guess you are using one of the 15KHz resolutions, if not I'd force one of them and give that a try.

Sorry I couldn't help any more....

Are you connecting it to the Jamma board or do you just happen to have it in the cab? (IE connecting to a computer?)  Also, did you install all the drivers and utilities per the instructions on Andy's website?  You can click on my tutorial link in signature for the sequence of steps to install this card.

Hahahaha, okay I was tinkering around with the computer and the arcade again when I noticed that the monitor output from the arcade had been disabled in windows.  javascript:void(0); So now that I have the output enabled I've encountered some new problems.

I'll have picture during the post screen and the windows loading screen but after that it changes to the pictures that you see there.  It is diagonal lines with jumbled pixels in there.  Does this mean I have to adjust the refresh rate of the monitor?  If so what's the safest way to do that, the adjustment pot is right next to the tube and I don't know if I should be wary of that and the anode wire or if the tube isn't a problem.

Thanks!

Thanks I did, and it's working now I just have the issue that I mentioned in my above post.

New updates, adjusted the vertical hold and that cleared up the picture but now I am getting the screen split in the middle of the monitor.  I'll have a whole picture but it is divided up between the two sides.  You can see what I'm talking about below.  Any suggestions?

your picture looks like you are supplying it with a 512 x 512 (or something other odd) signal.  someone said with that monitor, you can display a 640x480 with an arcadevga.

Yeah im putting it out at 640x480, but it still has that picture problem.

Here you can better see the duplication.

The J-PAC does not convert or process the video signal in any way except amplify it to the level required by an arcade monitor. The sync frequency jumpers only control the sync-in-range safety check. The PC must be configured to send the correct sync frequency for the monitor.

Constant "split screen" (one vertical split down the middle with 2 pictures, one each side). This means you have not configured MAME or ArcadeOS for 15Khz and the PC is still sending a normal VGA 640x480 signal. The J-PAC is operating in "scan divide" mode. To verify this is happening, try running with only the 15Khz jumper on. This will disable the J-PAC "scan divide" mode and the green LED will go out, indicating that the sync is out of range.

are you using a breakout cable from the PC to the monitor?

Simple answer is , youre feeding either the wrong resolution or the wrong refresh rate.  Are you sure you set up for 640x480 @15Hz? and not 30Hz?
