Title: Creating some TV room
Post by: Stars2099 on August 13, 2010, 03:33:03 am
So I'm building my own cab, and I originally designed for enough width inside to fit the TV, but due to my amateur woodworking skills, the inside shrank 1/2".  Anyways, the TV is having some trouble fitting, needing like 1/8 more space to fit.  It doesn't need alot of space, so i just need to shave down the insides of the side panel.  Will a sander do this, or do I need a specific tool?

Have you taken the TV out of its housing?  Sanding down all that wood would be a mess.  You may be better off with a router on a jig.  I'm not sure how big an area you have to cut down.  Any pics?

I don't have any pics yet, i can take some, but yeah, tv isnt in there. I dont need much room, just a little.  I didnt want to use a router, but i may have to.  I'll post pics later today.

So as you can see, the inside is ~30 1/2 inches and the tv width is ~30 1/2".  So basically i can push it in an inch, but than it gets jammed.  So as I was saying earlier, I dont need alot of room, just enough to wiggle the tv in.  What's the best way to do that?

I would decase the TV.  Is it already decased?

if it's literally that little space you need, I'd be partial to sanding down the edges of the TV over the insides of the cabinet.

Far less material needed to be removed.

I wouldn't sand down the tv if I were you, even though Tumerboy is probably right in saying it's the fastest way. If you sand down the tv, you won't ever be able to use it anywhere else other then in an enclosed space like a cab. Personally, I like to keep my options open for the future...

If you have an electrical sander, sanding the inside of the cab shouldn't be all that hard/long with some heavy grit sanding paper. It will however create a lot of dust ofcourse, and weaken the sides of your cab.

Routing seems much more appropriate here, I don't know why you wouldn't...

If it's that little space you need, I'd seriously consider decasing the TV. Keep the case, you can always put it on later if you decide to trash the cab. and no sanding.
Most LCD's are pretty easy to decase, just take you time to see how the case snaps together so you can ease it apart instead of forcing it.

Offtopic:

Does anyone else ever get a kick over picking apart whatever is in the background of pictures like that? The Newegg box caught my eye first, then the PS2, then the Wii.. etc.

+1

sander + TV = asking for trouble

Even if it is an LCD tv you can get a bit of space by decasing it.  Probably more than you need.

Ok I have a question. I decased my TV, well, just the back part, but I dont know how to mount it inside the shelf. Any ideas? I cant post any pics cause Im at work, but its a 27" CRT tv, that looks like an arcade monitor without the frame. Some help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Those are two different posters.... So Stars who posted originally has an LCD tv, while Mikezilla who seems to want help has a CRT. :dizzy:
