Title: Neo-Geo 4-Slotter
Post by: FrizzleFried on August 09, 2010, 04:10:26 pm
Welp,  I picked up a Neo-Geo 4-slot cab.  I'd rate the condition at 7/10 perhaps....

The cab is functional... and the deal included 15 carts (4 boots 11 originals).  The negatives of the cab include no memory card PCB... the individual light up mini-marquee display has been removed and a single florescent installed...

...and the bottom left "front" corner was chewed up.  The guy I bought it from claims is big-old dog chewed it up...

After taking possession and cleaning her up a bit I made a couple of hard choices.  First off I decided she wasn't going to get a "full restoration" but rather just a nice clean up.  First thing to do was to "repair" the chewed up corner.  Since she's not going "full restore",  I decided to mask the damage as best as possible.  Out came some corner protectors and new T-Molding... a little alcohol and some magic erasers and here is how she looks...

Not perfect... but better than a chunk taken out.  I also painted the control panel and touched up a few things.  You'll also notice new COMP sticks and new  COMP buttons all around....

The final thing I did was purchase a Neo 150-in-1 cart which I have running in slot 1.

I would like to pick up a memory card board... plus I'm going to stick a custom 150-in-1 mini marquee and a few generic SNK/NEO-GEO mini marquees in and call it a day.  The cab plays great...

A new thread from Frizz in the restoration section and it's not filled with pictures of a stripped down cab, primer, paint and reassembly?  What a let down!

Seriously though, you gotta like it when you pick up a game that doesn't need much work to turn out nice.

Good job on the "resto", slacker!  :lol

One of my favorites...

...of course I already have Puzzle Bobble (same game) on the Taito Multigame...and the 3 or 4 versions of it on my MAME cabs... but it's still cool.

Did  you know that both BUST-A-MOVE and PUZZLE BOBBLE title screens are contained on the Neo-Geo cart?   I am not sure how,  but when I got the cab Puzzle Bobble title screen would come up... after messing with the cabs settings I now get Bust-A-Move title screen... strange, huh?

Welp,  I was bored a couple days ago and pulled the coin-door and re-painted it.  I removed the lock "bar" and cleaned up the front a bit.  I am trying to source a memory card reader...and I also put together a custom "150-in-1" mini-marquee set (takes up 2 positions on the marquee)...

(photos taken before I made the custom marquee)

It appears I am in need of both as the reader I had on the line... well... it didn't happen.

Whelp,

I picked up a memory card reader PCB and card... I also reproed (ie I mean MASSIVE...

Here is how she looks at present time.   I am just about done with her.  I'd love to find a new marquee plexi (mine has a crack) and I could surely stand to replace the CPO...but only if I can source a nice NOS plexi one... but that's about it.

I have no familiarity with Neo Geo's so excuse the basic questions.

I'm assuming the card reader is strictly for saving high scores?  Does it also do a save game so you can continue at another time, or even on another machine?

Once a game was selected, did the original marquee switch to light up just the game being played or did all four stay lit?  (I would think all four would stay)

It actually does NOT save high scores... it saves game position so you can come back and start on level 2... 3... 4... etc.

Originally the machines had EL sheets behind each mini marquee.  Only the game that was being played would light  up.  They were pretty unreliable and burned up pretty quick...and they're expensive to replace so many people removed them and stuck a florescent behind... that is how my cab is setup.

they are also used to play the same game on the home system and pick up where you left on the arcade (and vice versa).  You sure it doesnt save high scores? It's been a while since Ive owned my NeoGeo cabs (used to have 3 of them) , maybe thats just the home system (which I still have 2 of) I regret selling them everyday

Not so much. You probably have a Universal BIOS in the motherboard and as you've set the country to USA instead of Japan or Europe, The title screen will show Bust A Move as Puzzle Bubble wasn't licensed to the US. Setting the country/region to Japan will also give your red blood in the Metal Slug games. Protip: Stay away from Metal Slug 5, the only parts of the series worth caring about are 1, X and 3.  ;D

How is the 150-in-1?

I like it.   Seems to work as intended.  I've not come across any of the problems earlier versions evidently saw...

does your version of the cart default all games to difficulty 8?

Yup... but you can go in to each "games" menu and adjust the soft dips.  It seems to hold soft-dip data for quite a few games.  Way more than the 8 I read...
