That dude has mad skills. I also love how he quits after setting the record because he knows he can go higher. Gets his name in the news every time someone passes him.

Plus, why just dominate the score and kill the competition? It's fun to see who will step up to the challenge each time.

I have to give him respect for giving others a window to beat him... I didnt really like him after watching the King of Kong, but that has to be a classy move.. although you are right, if he gets beat, he gets more time in the light.

Sometimes I wonder if Billy Mitchell is as big of an ass as that documentary made him out to be. Or if the documentary would be made better with a bad guy...

From all accounts I've read the film really spun it to make him worse than he really is.

This is pretty awesome. I agree that it is easy to think of Billy Mitchell as a big idiot after watching KoK. I bet he is actually a nice guy and he seems like he is hella dedicated to anything he does, a good quality for anyone to have. I wonder what Hank Chien is feeling like right now? :-\

Sometimes I wonder if Billy Mitchell is as big of an ass as that documentary made him out to be. Or if the documentary would be made better with a bad guy...
From everything I've seen, the movie did exaggerate (if not outright make up) a lot... but he still comes off as kind of a choad.

There's no need to WONDER about it, it's been discussed a hundred times. The doc was edited to make him the bad guy. Prior to the documentary, Mitchell and Wiebe recorded an interview at CAX and they were perfectly amicable, and Mitchell was not an ass.

Perfect timing that The King of Kong is being discussed again - my build should be done this week!
While I know they edited the movie to make Billy look like a ---meecrob--- nozzle, it is still fun to think of him as an evil robot isn't it?
Steve W. Has some new challenges coming up too - I have him as a friend on Facebook and he recently posted that he's been playing for at least an hour a day while he's on summer vacation (he's a teacher if you didn't know).

And, agreed, the doc made him look worse than he apparently is. I have seen other interviews with him and he doesn't come across as an ass at all...just a passionate nostalgia icon of long passed days...

I think he is brilliant and I hope it is all an act. The doc makes him look bad which in-turn makes the doc much more interesting. Without Billy Mitchell King of Kong would have just been a niche movie like "High Score". Nice movie but nothing truly memorable and certainly not much for non-gamers.
I have non-gaming friends that loved KOK mainly because of Billy. My wife in particular loved it and was genuinely excited when I told her that he regained the record.

He also fits nicely into the King Of Kong stereotype with that interview. Either it's super dry humor or the guy is a raging egotist.
Chances are it's a little of both. :)

It's kind of funny, I had an odd craving, to watch King of Kong again yesterday. My wife sat down and watched some of it, I don't think she has a very high opinion of Billy. I think I'd like to meet him before I pass judgement, but the doc did make him out to be an asshat.

I personally have never met him, but my cousing was an editor and writer for IGN several years back and met him around the time he got some pacman award. He said he was an ok guy but extrememly arrogant.

Im with Wp34 on that one. It would be a yawnfest if Billy wasnt there or if he was just a nice guy, you gotta have an antagonist to your protagonist(steve). Especially since steve was so boring anyway. My favorite part of the movie was when the dude came over to some guys at an arcade and he said "hey, there is a DK kill screen coming up if you guys are interested"... :laugh2: Almost pissed my pants. Poor little virgin.
Same thing with Arnold and Lou Ferrigno in Pumping Iron. Would have been lame if there wasnt some heat/competition between the two.
Best part is his hair. And his wife. And the fact that he makes hot sauce. The dude is awesome!

Yeah, the dude makes no bones about who he is. It's too bad that he's so insecure about everything else in his life that he feels the need to compensate for it.
And the DK kill screen guy is Brian Kuh - the guy I called a tool in an earlier post. No amount of editing could trick the viewer into thinking this guy is anything more than a total --cream-filled twinkie--.

I went to funspot tournament last year and met Walter Day and got to talk to Billy Mitchell on the phone. He seemed super cool to me both guys.
