hi ,
im just wondering if there are 4pin fans available for dell systems ? preferably not made by dell , cause lets face it , they are way too loud.
my cab is extremely annoying and you'd swear there was a gale blowing inside it , but the fans are actually very weak
i do know that using a fan off a cpu heatsink would work , but i cant exactly buy 3 cpu coolers and take the fans off as they cost alot , even for junk ones.
i dont mind cutting into wires so i could join up the fan with the dell connector , but ive searched alot for these 4pin fans and aint found much
anyone have any suggestions
cheers
dave.

What size do you need?

You're talking a case fan?
Just get any fan of appropriate size (with a decent review), and most come with connectors to hook into a molex, so no need to cut and splice.
Some come with a built in adjustment for RPM so you can balance out noise:performance as you see fit, others adjust themselves based off temp, etc.
Follow cotmm68030's link to Newegg...they have a great selection.

thanks for the replies , but i think you mis-understand.
a normal case fan is 3pin and comes with a standard molex connector.
its 3 pins are : positive / negative / rpm
what im looking for is a 4 pin fan , which dell fans are .
the 4pins are : positive / negative / rpm / voltage regulator
these are used by dell so that the mobo can regulate the power to the fans in case the temp sky rockets.
( seems to me like they are on full already so i dont know why they bothered ) . but , if i do try and take the
dell fan out and replace it with a 3pin ( technically it'll work ) im looking at recieving a pop-up from the bios during boot up
telling me that a system fan isnt connected.
if i get a 4pin fan ( 4 pin fans usually are found on cpu heatsinks only ) and splice the wires , the bios wont pop up messages
while im turning on the pc. ive tested taking out a non-essential dell fan before and it wouldnt let me boot untill it was re-connected.
anyways, thought i'd try here for some info :)

No, I get that actually 8)
Check out page 2 of my jukebox thread. I am using a dell where I removed the case fan/cpu fan shroud combo.
While I see the fan error in the bios log, I do not get stopped by it or have any sort of pop iup. Try setting your BIOS options that report on errors (like keyboard attached) to off.

My link was to fans that were only variable speed via 4pins, unless I linked wrong somehow.

the fans may be variable and listed as 4 pin ( i.e - they can be connected to 3 / 4 pin headers ) , but they are not true 4 pin fans.
take a look at any fan on the page and you will see only 3 wires on all fans listed.
and gryhnd ,
i'll check out your project.
the only reson why my pc stops and tells me the error is because its an xps system. these get extremely hot no matter what
and dell have strict guidelines as to what is and isnt connected to the board . i know its all a warranty / money racket / " use dell parts only "
rip off but i'd like to find true 4 pin fans that i can splice onto the dell connector and have a quiet games room :)

but i'd like to find true 4 pin fans that i can splice onto the dell connector and have a quiet games room :)
Good luck. When I was researching the same for my dell (which is a 3 pin), folks who spliced in said the fan itself turned out to be so proprietary that the BIOS still reported errors. :dunno

What about this?

That one is 3 pin.

Yay reading comprehension!

the reason there was errors is because the bios needs to sense that the fan is running at a certain rpm range.
get this wrong and it'll cause glitches. most reasons is because people dont look at what they are buying. they just see a product
and expect it to work , so splicing in a fan that has a different voltage rating or rpm range wont cut the mustard.
thats why i was asking here does anyone know of true 4 pin fans , or where to get them , so i could check out and see which one would suit.
but no worries , i'll figure something out.

At least that one's 4 pin/4wire. :P

hehe, im happy you found one , but read the review .
not exactly what i had in mind ;D
-
...because when her PC is working right its nice and quiet but still puts out some a lot of air.
That's not a positive?
-
it is a positive , but not when it sounds like a truck.
the whole purpose of finding a different 4 pin fan to begin with is to quieten the pc , not to increase airflow.
-
Keep in mind that the volume of the fan goes up with the CPU work load. In a gaming system, you are likely going to have game sounds going when the CPU is heavily loaded, so it won't be that noticeable. Hopefully, when the system is idle, the CPU is not loaded, so the fan should be quiet.
That's how my company Dell laptop works. When I have a heavy analysis task running the fan kicks on and it's pretty damn loud. When I'm idling, it's very quiet.

im driving a 24" lcd in my cab .
mame doesnt use the gpu to process the graphics , it uses the cpu instead. so thats gonna put a fair amount of work on the intel thats in there.
the dell xps 600 i have is constantly loud , even with game noise . its the way most of dell's flagship pc's are . its so they last longer out of the box.
im not saying that i dont appreciate the cooling on offer , i just wish they would make replacement fans or even upgrades for users who
get sick of listening to the constant drone of a loud fan .
regardless , ive found the culprits which are causing most of the noise and intend on changing them .
its the exhaust fans on the power supply . they must be only an inch in diameter , but they sound like a jet in motion.
i need to rip open the psu and see how they are wired.
-
maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way but why not just remove the blades from Dell fan (no noise or BIOS message) and then run fans you want off a molex splitter?
-
I would imagine that unless you broke the blades off perfectly you'd end up with it out of balance.. then it'd vibrate horribly.
From what I've read looking at these Dell 4 pin fans, the BIOS flags that error message if it detects sub 1300rpm speed.
Btw, I also read on some models of Dell that turning off the 'error on no keyboard' message in the bios would also disable that error message. Would be worth giving it a shot.
-
ive decided to put off changing the fans for now.
ive only just completed this build in the last 3 days so i think i'll leave it for awhile and then come back to it.
because as it stands, im wasting too much time on hardware and letting the project slip behind schedule.
i was supposed to have the final video of this build posted last monday on youtube
anyways, thanks for the replies guys :)

I know you've given up, but I just found one of these sitting on my desk under a bunch of other parts:
http://www.cwc-group.com/ds5.html (http://www.cwc-group.com/ds5.html)
It's 4 pin/4 wire.
Just wanted to share.

remove the fan piece not break them off (unless you dremeled them down) I was trying to give him an option that kept them there. I'd just replace them all with 3 pin fans and turn off the error message (or at least live with it, better then a loud PC imo) if it were me.
