So I press F2 & increase the volume = yep I can hear them game while I play, sweet.
Then I exit & go back in = its quiet again.
Any ideas on how to make this thing save it?
"save game state on exit" is checked in mame
Any help would be appreciated, thanks
Edit: ok its just MK2 thats not saving it, me thinks its not save compatible eh?

Go to the in game test menu and turn thevolume up there
Access the test menu through the dip switches

Here is how to do it from the Mame FAQ:
Mortal Kombat II / Mortal Kombat 3 / Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
The volume for this game is TOO LOW!
When the game is running, hit F2 to get to the internal service menu. Hit F2 again to "close" the service switch so that you won't get stuck in the menu. Now, navigate to the "Volume Adjust" option (following the directions provided) and adjust the volume. It's best to keep the volume no more than 80-90% filled as it might cause your sound to be overdriven and crackle. When adjusted, simply exit the menu.

I was about to suggest changing your CMOS battery until I realized you were using mame. Have you tried save states? I havent had any issues wit MK2 saving sound setting on my MAME cab

Each game in MAME can have its own volume via ini entry (either manually, or through MAMEUI).

what version of mame are you running? i had this same problem a while back, using an old version of mame. i then updated to .124 and the problem went away. there was a change made somewhere a while back that fixed this, i'm not sure if it was at version .124 or before, but i know .124 works fine
