Title: MAMEGATE MG-1 marquee
Post by: zallax on August 05, 2010, 04:34:42 pm
Here is the marquee for a bartop project I am working on.  The marquee is actually wider but I just cropped it to show the details.  To see in a bigger form click http://i36.tinypic.com/331hisg.png (http://i36.tinypic.com/331hisg.png).

Is this just for you, an obvious Stargate fan, or do you plan on showing it to anyone else?

The questions I see coming from introducing a friend to this machine are:

What is Mamegate?
... oh really? what is Stargate?
..... oh, yeah I remember that movie.  So what is mame?
.....  Oh okay so what does MG1 mean?
..... I see...  wtf is a Tilk?
...... so do you want to play darts?

I love mame as much as anyone does, but why use it in your theme?  And why use a bad tv show made from a bad movie?

Where did you get the image of the gate? Do you have the image of the whole gate?

Yes, I have the whole gate.  I plan on using it in other places on the cab.  The gate is a Blender model.  I just removed the glyphs and added my own using Photoshop.

Very cool. Would you be willing to share it?

How about a barter?   Put one of your Tron restictors in the mail and I will send you a HD version of the whole gate.  Would you want one with or without glyphs?

So you designed and drew this gate completely yourself?

Oh no, I did not create the Stargate model.  Like I said, I just removed the glyphs from the model, rendered it.  Then, I drew some arcade sprites, and added them using Photoshop.

So you're trying to barter with someone elses work? I don't think so but thanks anyway.

First, the feedback:
IMO, that marquee looks really unfinished. The font could use something to spruce it up more...perhaps using a different font, or adding a separated drop shadow, or extrude it so it looks more 3D. Some more effort other than just hitting the text button and typing in the name!
 :banghead:
Also, everything is so flat! Add some self-shadowing to that gate, some lighting highlights (pick a light direction too), up the contrast more. Do an image search on their promotional posters, you'll notice there's a lot more colour going on than just flat gray shaded models. Use reference images!

Speaking of, it all looks gray, and doesn't look that good as is. You can barely make out the sprite glyphs, and the whole image gets over-powered by the your over-zealous use of the liquify filter. It's not clear at all. A good artist trick is to look at image while squinting, if you can make out all the details then it's clear...if not, you'll have to push the contrast up more.
I would also work a bit more on the star field in the back.

Second, the scamming.
Yeah, a Tron Restrictor for free open-sourced models...that's a scam deal. I must call you out on this.

Took all but 2 secs on a google search.

I only ask that I get credit for the model, and I would be thrilled to see any projects you use it for.
Not only are you trying to hawk someone else work for your own gain, but you didn't even bother crediting the guy!

As an artist myself, this really pushes my buttons.
The guy spent the time making the model, was nice enough to release this for everyone to use free of charge, and you're trying to pull this "barter" crap??

It's a good thing Encryptor wasn't born yesterday.

Encryptor, you can probably find a quick tutorial on how to render out a high-res picture in Blender, if you're unfamiliar with the program.  It's open-sourced, and has quite a community following it, there's a ton of documentation out there free to access.

Trading a Tron restrictor for free artwork... :whap

I did exactly that after he said it was a blender model and downloaded it this morning.

Hey Encryptor, I've got a fart in a cup, do you want to swap for your Tron motherboard?  ;D

Well as tempting as that may be it took me a long time to get the board set and my wife will tell you I have plenty of farts already.  :laugh2:

I admire the guy for trying... :lol  Maybe he thought you didn't know how to make a render and would charge you for the 10 second pleasure. I'm sure there are companies that do that sort of thing... like those bloody "buy your coursework" ones, they didn't write it, they just nicked it from someone else. This guy just uses the same business model. >:D

But seriously, do you want to trade a stargate for a tron restrictor?

Com'on  guys art hacks are done all the time. Pac man for example. and you won"t barter with that??? Mamegate is a fun
concept, and should treated as such.... That Tron restrictor on the other hand..... give me a cup of fart anyday!!!!!

Just because it's done all the time, doesn't make it right...

I don't think you're seeing the point. That blender model was released for free, to an open-source community. Anyone can go and grab it from there without too much trouble. So why would he give up something that actually has worth, for something he can acquire for free. There's a term for that, it's called "taking advantage" or "gouging".

No, not quite like that, I agree it should be free... and I bet he regrets the barter thing. BUT to be fair here not everybody
knows how to render and photoshop there stuff.... hence the freelance artist [dont pay him you dont get your stuff back]
I would venture to guess he would have sat up for days to make it better..... for what a seven dollar trade.
Now maybe we should critiqe this restrictor with as much passion......

Apparently what you failed to get from this thread was that I wasn't asking him to do any work for me. I simply asked if he would be willing to share the model he got for nothing that was someone elses work. He didn't have to sit up for days to do anything.

You can critique what you want with my restrictor with as much passion as you want. I don't claim they are perfect. They are a way for people to be able to make a joystick that they can play Tron with as it should be played. I've sold many of them with no complaints and many compliments and thanks for making them.

You don"t think that he would done anything you wanted, add a duck [a free bitmap download] @wwwaddaduck.com  or  a gingerbread
house  @gingerbreadhouse.com.....  It is free, yes we get that, It was a bad idea, yes we get that too....
NOW for your restrictor [something of worth] by your own admission, is not perfect???    Oh yes do elaborate.

The OP tried it on which goes against the spirit of the forum a bit.  I dont think a few photoshop cut n pastes and a blender render = someones effort on a piece of hardware (regardless of what you think of it) but then that's just my opinion.  I like giving my time away for nothing to BYOAC folk (now and then) it's nice to be able to give back to the forum community in some way. Encryptor was only interested in the origin of the Stargate model as he says.

I reckon the model image (in general) is pretty cool, I'll to have to check it now.

It's a hand made item made in a home made mold so it's not perfect. The mold was made from an original restrictor. They are hand poured, and hand trimmed so no they are not perfect. But it is a very good replica. If you want any further info talk to someone that's got one or buy one yourself.

How about a barter!  Would you send her one if she promises to continue to argue with you?

NOW for your restrictor [something of worth] by your own admission, is not perfect???    Oh yes do elaborate.

I'll elaborate. The only problem with Encryptor's restrictor is that he doesn't supply a Tron cab to put it in. You have to do that part yourself. Had he made this clear to me when ordering, I would never have parted with such a HUGE sum of money for this 'not perfect' item.

He's clearly not put any time, money or effort into reproducing a very specialist part for an incredibly small market.

In other words, put it to bed Jen, let's all be friends again.

I have been hacking my own art for many years sweetie, making my own parts, and yes even a tron restrictor [milled from red acrylic]
It"s just as unrespectful for you to cricticize somebodys art/render/blend to such a point they dont enjoy it anymore. So you tell me why
I should contribute?  I enjoy what I do.
I was not attacking this restrictor, merely comparing it as something of value.

I don't know what the reference is to the dress. I'm not terribly thrilled with the hostility on either side of this thread but I tend to stay out of such things hoping people will work things out. I've got no tolerance for sexual harassment however -- that's a one way ticket off the forum. Mind the rules and keep it civil folks please - thanks!

In regards to sexual harassment, there wasn't anything but a comment to watch the condescending name calling.
