Title: Interior BC forest fires
Post by: eds1275 on August 05, 2010, 12:37:53 pm
Wow I was in Tsawwassen yesterday, hazy from the forest fire smoke drifting down and over from the interior. Today I am in Parksville on the island, it's smoky! And this morning when I was in Nanaimo, you could definitely smell it. I don't think the fires are worse than last year, but I guess the wind has just been pushing this way for too long.

Theres been a ton of fires around where I live in Southern California the past two weeks.  I actually got evacuated from my home last Thursday, but the firefighters managed to stop the fire at the edge of my housing tract.  Here's a pic from my bedroom window, I evacuated 2 hours after the pic was taken when the fire was significantly closer (but at the bottom of the hill, so not as impressive of a picture).

I don't think the BC fires are any worse this year; at least, the fires aren't threatening as many housing developments as years previous. I work in insurance so I get frequent updates about any fires that are looming near settlements. The number of people that will only try to insure something once a fire is already on its way is appalling.

Fortunately, the forecast for the weekend is constant rain. Hopefully some of that water makes it inland and helps the firefighting efforts.

Aren't you required to have your home insured anyway?

It is generally required only if you have a mortgage. If it's a condo or townhouse, the building is covered by the strata policy and a mortgage lender doesn't care beyond that, but the strata policy does not cover any upgrades you've done or your any contents you own.
