I read on another forum that these were being destroyed because they're gambling machines. Though its hard to really tell because of the size of the picture, if you look at them it does appear that even the Candy cabs have just button setups and no joysticks.
Can't verify it for sure, but does seem plausible. Definitely a shame!

+1 to tok's post ... and it's the law over there that they be removed from service after a period of time and destroyed (although some are refurbed and sent over here).

Totally unacceptable! OSHA would have a field day with these work conditions. I'm pretty sure there is some regulation about standing on top of a desk when using a sledgehammer.

Excellent!
I just bought a house, it was a forecloser so I got a 450,000 house in Chicago for 180,000, but it wasn't winterized so all the pipes burst and the basement was flooded for several weeks. I had to gut the whole thing. All that I have in the basement is a new water heater, furnace washer/dryer, utility sink and a toilet. No walls, just cement.
I'll eventually build a full bathroom downstairs, but I have at least a years worth of work upstairs and outside, so it'll be a while before the basement gets finished. I was planning on just putting up 4 plywood walls around the toilet so I at least have a second function toilet. A friend of mine has a broken generic sit-down game he (his wife)wants to get rid of, he keeps telling would be a great Mame machine, but I know two full-size arcade cabinets that never get played is two to many, so I keep telling him no thanks. It's also taken me 10 years to build my first cabinet.
But that photo gives me an idea.
