I recently bought an older laptop from ebay (HP Model: NX 6125) and want to make a HTPC PC from it. I have everything under control apart from the power on button. It plugins into the motherboard using 4 pin plug (red, white, white, black) - is there anyway I can use these wires to use a normal power button (2 connectors) in any way please? or buyl a different power button for me to fit/use?

I believe you can but you lose the hibernation /sleep functions of the button
Just use a multi-meter to see which two leads to use
I hat to actually connect to the button itself and one of the four side leads (took me some time to work that out)
this was on a dell XPS 1530

you mean 1 of the four leads AND to the button board?
-
yes, just like in the picture, 1 of the four leads and the metal button housing
but make sure you test it with a multi-meter to be sure yours might be different

i'm going to sound dumb here but do you mean a normal electrical multi tester?
If so, how would i use - they look very complicated.. or is that just me LOL
