Am I allowed to do surveys here?
I'm writing a bit of software and I spent the last week chasing after a fubared registry entry when I discovered the Microsoft documentation contradicts itself (eg, I was chasing a feature present in 2005 installs, but not 2002. Yet my 2002 install clearly has it. :banghead:)
Oh well. Microsoft is Microsoft.
So here is my survey question. It's an easy one.
What version of Microsoft OS are you running in your cab(s) (don't forget to mention if you have any Service Packs)?
I want to get a more accurate idea of what's actually running in cabs so I don't go after something that's specific to my install of Windows.
Sorry Linux users. I like and use various flavors of Linux but due to the nature of the software, it's a Windows only question.
-
Beside Linux, there's also OSX. I Run 10.6.4 in my cab. The only system that boots properly.
But in some cases, when I need the mac for other stuff, I put a PC in there with Win XP Home SP3 all updates installed.
-
Windows 7 -- btw, why don't you actually make thread a poll? I expect you'd get a much larger sample that way.
-
(micro) XP SP3 all service packs applied
-
Win XP Professional SP2

Yeah, I just realized it's an option next to posting a new thread.

Tiny XP, but had Win XP w/SP3

I bought some software recently and it said it required "Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition or better" so I installed Linux

Both cabs are XP Pro. One is SP3 the other SP2.
A laptop I'll be using for my jukebox came to me with Vista installed. I've brought it up to the most recent SP...which is 2 I think?
-
XP sp2 on my own cab. I use tiny xp on my mates machines.

dude that joke was awesome when windows95 came out! /sigh
I use regular XP with service pack 3 on my MAME cabbie
-
Regrettably, the pc I used came with Vista and I didn't change it before installing everything. Once I had invested all the time, I didn't want to risk downgrading to XP. While not perfect, I find XP much more stable and less of a RAM hog.
-
XP Home SP3
-
Tiny XP on my arcade compy [boo me not even started building the cab yet]
-
Win 98 SE booting to DOS

Ah, but the classics never go out of style. Especially when they are as true today as they were back then. :)
That being said, my cab is running 64-bit Win7 just because that is what it came with and I wanted to give hyperspin a try. No updates, I've never plugged it into the network.

[OFF TOPIC]
I wrote this long post about what was going on in my life. Sat there for nearly twenty minutes reading it over and over. Until I decided it was too "drama queen"-like. I also realized that the likely-hood of anyone here giving a flying ---fudgesicle--- about what I write is about as likely as me winning the lotto.
In a nut-shell, I'm not sure if I'll finish this. Tonight, every scrap of incentive just drained out of me.
So um... yeah. I guess that's it. :(

Its not true though, because better is an opinion not a fact, so while *nix might be better for HIM, the majority of people are better off on windows. I can and have used *nix, in fact I used to be a redhat fanboy. Then I grew up and realized different flavors for different people. The joke just isn't funny and really just shows arrogance, a superiority complex, and immaturity.
I hate to be a debbie downer and all but I think the point of this poll was to see what people were using, not a e-penis measuring contest (dont worry, you win that!)
@SavannahLion we care, for realsies. If you gotta let something out, you can always PM me.

Also, I think you're completely discounting how incredibly low your chances of winning the lottery are. ;D

I know I am a little late to give my opinion on the OS consideration, but from what I can tell and have dealt with, the only OS you will have the least Mame headache with would be win xp 32bit. Currently anyways, xp is the big "bridge" OS for the Mame wintel package. It also runs on older machines (unlike vista or 7) and mame is updated and more stable on wintel OSs than any of the other OSs it is ported to.
I personally use tinyxp as it is well... Tiny and speedy.
Others will have their opinions, but if younwant the least headache when it comes to mame, I would currently go with xp.

Tiny7 rev01 (by the same guy who makes TinyXP).
