Title: Reading suggestions.
Post by: Generic Eric on July 05, 2010, 07:42:27 pm
I am going to a used book store tomorrow, so I'd appreciate suggestions.

I prefer sci-fi. A military sub plot is ok, but no Tom Clancy.  Not a fantasy fan.  Other than that, I am open.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Without question you need to read this if you haven't.

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. Another must read.

The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

You Suck by Christopher Moore

Storm Front: The Dresden Files, Book 1 by Jim Butcher -- highly recommended

Foundation series by Asimov (all like 7 books...)
HHGttG by Adams, that series never fails to succeed.

I prefer the Dirk Gently series to HHGTtG.  But yeah, Ender's Game.  If you haven't read it, that's your ticket.  And it satisfies both the sci-fi and miltary sub plot requirements in one shot.

Armor by John Steakley.  It is an homage to Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers.  Which you should also read if you have not.  These both meet the Sci-Fi/Military criteria.

+1 for Ender's Game.  An absolute classic.

+1 for Dresden Files

You should read Starship Troopers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starship_Troopers) by Robert A. Heinlein. Don't compare it with the film based on it - completely different. Ticks the sci-fi and military boxes, and it's a classic.

Dune - Frank Herbert
Macroscope - Piers Anthony
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein

I really enjoyed Olympos / Ilium by Dan Simmons for something that isn't too dusty.

I was given Ilium for Christmas but have not started it yet.  Might be a cue to get it off the shelf.  Didn't know there was another book in the series either.

I've never once seen a used copy of Stranger in a Strange Land that hadn't been defaced.   :-\

Defaced?  How so?

I've had a guy at work recommend the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  I need to check that one out.

I recently read Black Monday by Reiss.  Pretty good, but the ending left much to be desired.

Perdido Street Station and The Scar by China Mieville are terrific. His other books are pretty good, too, though I haven't read his most recent book, Kraken. But I doubt you'll find that at a used book store already.

Stranger in a Strange Land is retarded.  One of the worst books I've ever read.

Memoirs of an Invisible Man is brilliant.

If you're not opposed to venturing outside the genre:

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
The World According to Garp
For Whom the Bell Tolls

All three of the Dragon Tattoo books are fantastic.  They almost read like one long book.  Not really scifi though.

Nah, not scifi at all, but my mom went absolutely berserk over them and had the last book pre-ordered for months.  She was on cloud nine when I gave her the second and third movies.  I finally decided to see what the fuss was all about.... good stuff, I read it when I'm on the exercise bike and I'm actually lengthening the workouts...   :lol

I ordered the third book from Amazon UK.  It was out in Europe almost a year before the US.

I've only seen the first movie and really liked it.  How are the second and third?

The Devil You Know and Vicious Circle by Mike Carey.  They are the first 2 Felix Castor books, I just checked amazon and see that there are 3 more!  It looks like I'll be heading to Borders tomorrow to pick them up.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.  We had other errands to run and I didn't make it there until after they closed.  I have a list I can take with me next time though.

Yep, all three are done.  I haven't watched any yet though.

I think I reviewed number one here. Bloody awesome movie, you have to see it! Some scenes are uncomfortably voilent- it's the only reason I didn't go back and watch it again...
