Title: Defender coin mech problem
Post by: kaykaitkar on June 30, 2010, 12:01:30 pm
I picked up a defender cabined that I am trying to restore.  I am not familiar at all with Williams coin mechanisms.  When I insert a quarter into either slot they automatically go to the coin return.  I pulled them both out, opened them up and am still trying to figure it out.  Does anyone have any clues as to what I should be looking for?

The coin mechs have 5301-10 printed on them.

if you're putting in .25c  and its getting rejected, then you have a diff size coin mech. most likely it accecpt TOKENS (maybe .984 in size or .882 in size, but then again it might be diff).

You can always HACK a coin mech to accept ALL size COINS. Search here for it.

A picture of it with help.
There are some screw adjustments that you can play around with.

Yeah, you should be able to adjust it to drop the coins in the accept slot rather than the reject slot. Personally, since I use tokens and virtually all the games I've bought have had quarter mechs, I have started taking the lazy approach of shooting some glue from a hot glue gun in the mech above the reject slot to create a ramp to force coins to go to the accept slot. Again, you should be able to adjust it to work right, but I don't care enough about it to do it the "right" way. ;)

Post photos.
What country are you in? THe mech could be made for Canadian coins. It could also be the type with electro-magnets and if they aren't engaging, again it won't take coins. Etc...

The Williams silver coin door has a "lockout coil" mounted on it to reject coins if the power is off. The later black "Coinco" door has two lockout coils.

Yeah, good point Ken. Test the mechs outside of the game. Hold them upright and level and drop your coins in and see where they fall. This is what you'd want to do as you're adjusting them anyway.
