Title: What legal roms are available?
Post by: Demon-Seed on June 26, 2010, 09:57:52 am
Hello
I am looking at selling a cabinet but want to put on as many quality legal roms I can.  Can anyone advise me where and what is available out there? will they work with front ends like mamewah etc or do they have their own? Please provide links and info I would appreciate it.

thanks
Jim

1) You can't sell MAME, so you can't sell a cabinet with MAME.
2) The roms that were permitted for free distribution for use with MAME also have no-commercial use clauses, so again, you can't sell them.

So, your answer is none.

I think perhaps you're reading too much into Demon-Seed's post. When I read it, I didn't come away with the impression that he was actually selling MAME itself. I got the impression he was just selling a cab, and putting MAME and a few legal ROMs on it as a favour to the purchaser.

Incidentally, what's your position on the MAME ROM burners who make a small charge for their service?

Hello
I think my post was confusing.  I know you can not sell mame and roms, I am not looking to do that.  I am asking what legal PC compilations are available, that I can buy on CD/DVD and load onto a cabinet legally?  I have found several but the games are limited... is there a large legal collection? Is there an alternative to starrroms??

The other question is if I buy more than one compilation can they work with mamewah or other frontend or must you use theres? (is there actual rom files to find on the disk)

I have found compilations but like I said most do not have many games... I have head there are some with 60+ games.... I know there is an atari one with 80

thanks
Jim

1. tell the buyer that your are selling the Cabinet, monitor, controllers, Hardware (PC etc) and TIME only.
2. Tell them that you had placed some programs in there in order for you to TEST the whole thing out and never got a chance to get rid  of it.
3. They can test it themselves to see everything is working.
4. However if they want it remove, you will.
5. Provide them a LINK to programs used or a LINK to one of those 500 to xxxx GAMES and let them buy it and you install it.
6. You will provide HARDWARE support if something is wrong but not SOFTWARE related.

I think that is the safest way to sell your hardware. They can find the LEGAL stuff themselves and you can help them installed it (it's up to you, Rule # 6).

I read somewhere that even if you buy the ROMS, it's not transferable.
The only one I knew was the HANANO one that came withe hte controller, MAME and some ROMS. I think it's GONE tho.

Hanaho used to include a Capcom disk with an emulator and games when they sold the HotRod but going by the fact that the site is down for maintenance and has never come back and the fact that there is a lawsuit from Capcom I guess that their compilation is not legal.  I think it all came back to what D Foley was doing and his collections of games.

How did you find out about this? What other information is out there? The further details require a subscription and I couldn't find anything on Google....

Hmmmm..

there's a Metal Gear Solid Collection for pc (1-6) and several games have been remade for pc.  You'd probably have to launch them from your frontend as batch files. The thing about collection is, you can't launch games individually like you can with mame

Did not find any more info.   All I know is that Capcom filed suit and therefore there must have been some sort of problem with the Capcom/Mame compilation that was supplied with the Hotrod.   I thought that it was legal for years until I tried to find out why Hanaho shut down.

Hanaho also released four Cd's with Capcom games through Selectsoft Publishing.

"Capcom Co. claims eight of its video games, including "1943 - The Battle of Midway" and "Street Fighter II" were illegally copied and sold by Conway Ho, Hanaho Games, Goodtime Novelty dba Chicago Gaming Co., and Douglas Duba, in Los Angeles Federal Court."

Legal ROMs for MAME:

http://mamedev.org/roms/ (http://mamedev.org/roms/)

However, they are only "legal" if received from the MAMEdev website.  They specifically prevent people from repackaging them or sell them on a cabinet.

That said, I do respect what you're trying to do.  A lot of people out there sell cabs with the illegal ROM sets, which is significantly worse IMO.

I'm telling you... batch files would work fine with this, for the games you can't configure use autohotkey to make it match your keyboard layout and bam

Metal Slug Collection
Burger Time (through steam)
Tetris (many versions available)
Hydorah
atari and midway have pc collections

Hey
I found a few compilations I am going to try before I buy.. not many out there... all separate companies...nothing seems to be combined.

I did see that Chicago Gaming makes the Arcade legends games.. and they come with like 60-140 games installed.  Do they sell that software separate? or does anyone know what pack they have?

thanks
Jim

Why are you so concerned about including games to sell your cabinet?

Hey
I am not so concerned, well sorta... just that at work many ppl would love a cabinet, however most would want games pre loaded on it..

Why are you so concerned about including games to sell your cabinet?

The difficulty with selling a cab without games is that the kind of people who would be willing/knowledgeable enough to load games on it and get it all running are the same kind of people who would just build their own cab. When the average joe schmo plunks down $1000+ for an arcade cab, they just want to plug it in and play. I think this is why cabs with xxin1 boards in them seem to sell better than cabs with PCs in them despite the fact that the latter can play way more games, is more customizable, and will likely run the games better.

I think the best way to sell a cab would be to not include Mame or any roms, but make setup as easy as possible. Basically have a nice frontend all set up and tell the buyer where to download Mame and to search for roms on torrent sites for the games they legally own. Give them very clear instructions about where to drop the Mame exe and the roms. Offer to help them with any software issues they may have for free up to 30 days from the date of purchase or something like that. Granted, this is still going to be less appealing to most people than just having a cab pre-loaded with games, but it's legal, and you could try to spin it as, "Don't buy a cab from someone else and let them choose what games you get. Buy from me and pick your own games." This is probably the best you can do without breaking the law.

You may not sell a lot going this route, but seriously, you should be doing this for the love of the hobby anyway. It's a niche market. I'd be surprised if anyone out there could scratch out a decent living selling Mame cabs.

Just sell the cabinet with windows installed and configured to be clean.  You can install one of the 'collections' applications (heck there are some one steam these days) but these don't always include roms... heck, I don't think most of them do, they are just ports.  Give them a link.  But some collections have some games on them.

You could also put dragons lair on it legally.

But without starroms, there is very little you can do.

You could also go with a 48-in-1 board instead of a computer (or others) but heck, chances are those are illegal also...

if they have the games already, would it be illegal to help them install them? I don't think helping them install the roms is illegal , so maybe all you have to do is tell them where they could get the roms from (dvd sets) and.. discourage it at the same time...

I heard rumors that David R Foley is selling these, but I am not sure if he is still offering them. :)

Hello
Well I tries several compilations and the navigation etc sucks bad...... the Chicago gaming system seems perfect just wished it was sold separately.  Now if some legally owns a game can the mame versions be used then?

thanks
Jim

No, because you can't sell MAME regardless and owning a port does not grant you the right to use a different version of the game in MAME even if you were allowed to sell MAME, which you're not.

(and if you are putting MAME on a cabinet you're selling then you're selling MAME)

If anyone still cares about this, here is a link to the complaint filed by Capcom against Hanaho:

http://www.mediafire.com/view/?xmy0u3f9zi0d1mo (http://www.mediafire.com/view/?xmy0u3f9zi0d1mo)

It doesn't say, here, but in the other documents available, the lawsuit was "dismissed with prejudice" by Capcom in 2008, which means they probably reached a settlement of some sort.
