Title: Garbage reward-Part 2
Post by: Edgedamage on June 19, 2010, 12:27:57 am
I was walking by a trash can and found sitting on top was a Linksys WRT-54g it was missing a power supply. I found one and booted it up it seemed to work, I installed DD-WRT firmware. It has been running for 6hrs non-stop wireless and wired have been transferring files back and forth with no problems. I like how with DD-WRT I can turn off the WIFI.

My old router NEVER got over 10Mb/s a sec.

How do you *easily* install DD-WRT? I need to install that software on mine so I can connect my Revenge from Mars pin to the tournament network.

I looked at my model number and the hardware revision. I downloaded the matching .bin file
http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database)

and in the router setup page I hit update firmware and pointed to the ,bin file and a couple min later it was installed and running. You could easily spend a hour going over the new features and settings.

Woah, when did DD-WRT start requiring activation? Wasn't this an open source project?

I never had to activate anything.  Edit, I see they seem to have professional software that needs activation.

What connection speed do you pay for from your ISP?  Using a different router won't net you better download speeds, it is more than likely you chose a different server to run the speed test from to explain the differences.

I have to go along with Jim on this one. My router recently died and I bought a new one and got really crappy speeds. I actually returned it and bought a different one. I got way better speeds with the new one. I looked it up and many people had the same problem with the other router. Slow speeds.

I pay for 10mb/s but I found out my provider has a new feature called speed boost which this router takes advantage of. I did the IP release / renew thing a few times and still get the fast speed. Thing that bugs me is I just bought a router 4 months ago when my last one died, my new one is the WRT160N.
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/APAC/en/products/WRT160N (http://www.linksysbycisco.com/APAC/en/products/WRT160N)
And this old router is faster than the new one.

I guess you guys purchased defective routers.  On wireless I could understand due to different signal strengths and maybe even different signaling technologies (802.11b vs 802.11g), but on a wired connection you should get what you pay for and nothing else.  It's possible you set up your router incorrectly or had a bad cable if you had bad speed.  Your cable modem and the speed assigned to it by your ISP is what determines your router's connection speed.

$400!

 :o

It was missing a bolt in one of the arms and I had to hit the wood with some touchup markers.  The leather was perfect.

Nice I love finding good things tossed out.

WOW, nice. I don't get why something like that gets tossed. Aren't they obligated to return it somewhere to be counted as a loss, or sold off to a surplus vendor?

Anyways, NICE CHAIR!

When there are items that arrive damaged or missing parts, or items that dont sell,
they are mostly tossed out and filed as a tax loss.

The items are supposed to be destroyed.  Some stores will cut or smash things before
they toss them out, as they are not supposed to be able to be recovered.

Dumpster diving is Illegal, and I believe you can end up it jail if you are caught.

Its hard to believe the kinds of things that are tossed out in the trash.
Ive seen excellent industrial metal display shelving units tossed.  The stuff Should be
resold, recycled, etc.  Its a real shame to see such a throw-away society.

Dumpster diving is Illegal, and I believe you can end up it jail if you are caught.

A quick search proves this statement false.   Trespassing on someones property to dumpster dive is illegal but the act of dumpster diving itself rarely is.

If you time it right, you can get stacks of free stuff at GameStop.  A guy at work often shows up with huge piles of strategy guides, and occasionally things like boxes of collectible cards, hats, t-shirts, etc. because its all outdated stuff that isn't selling anymore, so GameStop was going to throw it out.  The guy I know stops by their store probably once a week and asks if they have anything they're getting ready to throw out.

Ahh well yes, and wouldnt going to a mall dumpster after hours count as trespassing?
You could probably be considered to be trespassing if you walk through the malls
non-public passageways.

Im merely saying that if you do it, best be on the lookout for the red&blue lights.

Nope. Was not complaining. Only explaining the details as far as Ive seen & heard.

Im happy you picked up the chair.  Nice score.

Ive picked up a few small things ages ago, but nothing worth mentioning.
Usually its not worth the risk of getting caught Imop.  (unless you are underage)

Parking lots on retail property aren't public.  They are privately owned.   The owner just allows you on the property for activities he approves of.   If he doesn't approve of them and they are illegal, he can have those engaging in said activity arrested.

Title: Re: Garbage reward
Post by: AtomSmasher on July 05, 2010, 03:56:15 pm
Really?  100% of retail parking lots are privately owned?   ::)

If it doesn't have purple fence posts and "Posted No Trespassing" signs all over it, it ain't private in this state.

So if you don't put a no trespassing sign in your yard, then it becomes owned by the state?  Tough laws where you're from.

I agree that retail parking lots are permitted to be used by the public by the owner, and therefore trespassing cannot be enforced without some sort of warning or signage, but obviously that doesn't change who owns the land.  I would say it's likely that 100% of retail parking lots are privately owned, but often some sort of community ownership with all of the buildings surrounding the parking lot.

This is how skateboarders often get kicked out of parking lots.  The owner does not like their activities, so we warns them to leave, and if they don't, then the owner can call the police for trespassing.

I'm from the Netherlands, but over here that's how it works yes. Not that's it's owned by the state, but you cannot have people arrested for trespassing if you don't have a sign up.

Makes sense in a way too. How else would you know that it's illegal to go somewhere? Personally I'd think a fence was enough, but apparently it's not.

Not true.  In order to arrest someone for trespassing, they must be given a written or verbal warning.  Signs make sense when the property isn't visited on a regular basis by customers.   It would be pretty stupid to build a parking lot and then put signs up all over the place telling people to stay away.

AtomSmasher is right.   This is how they enforce skateboarding rules, etc...   The owner can give an offender a verbal warning and if the person doesn't comply, he can have them arrested for trespassing.

Why do you think companies like Home Depot and Wal-mart have been sued (and lost) when someone gets hurt/mugged/robbed/raped in a parking lot?  It's because the own the land.  It isn't public property.  Its private property with public access granted to the public for certain uses.   By your logic, the inside of the Home Depot is public land as well since there are no signs and you are allowed to come and go as you please.

Texas Penal Code 30.05:

A person commits criminal trespass if he enters or remains on or in property or in a building of another without effective consent and he had notice that entry was forbidden or received notice to depart but failed to do so.  To further explain the statute, the term “notice” needs clarification.  There are several methods of notice that are acceptable under Texas Penal Code Section 30.05 (b)(2):  • Oral or written communication by the owner or by someone with authority to act for the owner.  • Fencing or other enclosure that is obviously designed to exclude intruders.  • A sign or signs posted on the property or at the entrance to the building placed so that it would be reasonably likely to come to the attention of the intruders, stating that entry is forbidden.  • The placement of identifying purple paint marks on trees or posts on the property, provided that the marks are:  1. Vertical lines of not less than eight inches in length and not less than one inch in width, 2. Placed so that the bottom of the mark is not less than three feet from the ground or more than five feet from the ground, and 3. Placed at locations that are readily visible to any person approaching the property and no more than 100 feet apart on forestland or 1000 feet apart on land other than forestland.

This is why dumpsters at stores in MA/RI/NH are usually surrounded by chain link fencing and a locked gate.  It's pretty obvious you're trespassing when you have to jump a fence or cut a lock to get to the dumpster.

Dumpster diving is Illegal, and I believe you can end up it jail if you are caught.

It depends on your location.  Some places (like where I live) it's perfectly fine.  Other places it's illegal - but generally they look the other way unless you're going thru residential garbage looking for people's information to steal their identities.

The garbage gods have blessed me again, walking home from work I found a PS2 (fat). It had a cd holder with 20 games in it. When I got it home I noticed the disk art was weird, I flipped over the disks and they are burnt copies. The machine works great and all the copies work. It even had all the cables and three controllers.

Nowhere special, I had left the computer that was sitting beside the PS2 it had no onboard ethernet. I has seen a kitchen aid stand mixer this morning, but I was on my way to the gym and had to get a workout in before work. Even I can't understand why someone would toss out a working PS2. It even played the "tester" ISO I snagged off the net.

Best garbage deal I ever had going was at work.  The company next door was the IT support building for a large supermarket chain.  For about three years, periodically pallets of computers and monitors would show up next to the shared garbage bins.  I asked about them and was told they were fair game, so I made several thousand extra dollars from ebay and garage sales during that time period.  Because they were free to me, I marked them to sell quickly and always had pocket cash!

Was clearing out my basement, took a hatchback loaded with crap computer parts to the dump, circa early P4, and maybe S939. Came back with a Q6600 with 4gb ram, Radeon 3650 and a 1tb hdd. Replaced three capacitors on the motherboard, good as new computer.

no, i'm all for turning it on, but I'm not gonna snoop through it, just toss in the XP, 7, linux, what have you and do a format, it's a bit inconsiderate to just go snooping through someone's hard drive, just because they're too naive to keep it. might as well go snoop through their mailbox because they don't have a mail slot.

Your best bet for permanently destroying a hard drive (without resorting to thermite, of course) is a 3/8" drill press. Run straight down through the spindle, it destroys the data beyond even the most advanced forensic recovery techniques. Something about the drill bit setting up micro-vibrations that essentially shatter the platters at a molecular level. This was the method chosen by the DoD when they were testing to learn how best to dispose of sensitive data.

I just wanted to share my latest score.  I figured I'd post it in this thread since the morals of dumpster diving should be out of the way, I mean, who wants to have that conversation again...

TJ Maxx is the wasteful company that decided they'd trow out one of those "kids" projectors because it has a "bad bulb."  No seriously that's what it said on the tag explaining why it was being discarded.  Turns out it uses a fairly standard bulb that you can buy at a local hardware store for track lighting.  The bulb indeed looks like it's burned out and I did a "play test" with a flashlight to try and spot any other obvious flaws which I could find none.  By the way, moving a flashlight around inside a projector to light up parts of the screen while playing Ms Pac-Man adds a new level of difficulty.  :P  In the same dumpster was a "full" size Aerobed which is now inflated in my living room.  That didn't have a sign stating why it was discarded but I found a tiny pinhole in the bottom which can easily be fixed with a patch.  $65 price tag on the projector, $60 on the bed.  Not the best dumpster find in this thread (the ATV takes that cake) but altogether a pretty good haul!

P.S.  I've bought a bulb and it's working fine now.  I've got it up on ebay here: New Discovery Wonderwall Entertainment Projector (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220824645457&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:1123)
