Title: Safety Issues... Unmounted monitor?
Post by: jbarket on June 16, 2010, 10:28:57 am
Hey guys,

I built about 98% of my Ultimate Arcade II last night. I'm probably two to three hours away from having it finished and having the control panel wired.

Originally, I was going to use a 27" Sony Trinitron for a monitor and fashion my own mount. However, the deal fell through, so I decided to just order a Wells Gardner D9800. It's a heavy beast, so I ordered mameroom's mounting kit for it.

Here's my question. Assuming the cab isn't going to be jostled around significantly or moved, is there any real danger to laying the monitor on the shelf until the mounting kit shows up? Am I at risk for it sliding out the back or something?

I want to be impatient about this and get it going, but I don't want to destroy the frame of the cab or have the monitor take a 4 foot fall.

How is your shelf angled?

It's definitely a downward slope, but on its own, I don't think it's bad. If I was setting a TV in there, I wouldn't worry at all. It's just a combination of the weight of the D9800, the chasis shape and the slope of the shelf.

Here's a photo of dekar's UA II where you can get some idea of the slope. As you can see, it's not extreme by any stretch of the imagination, but it's definitely not flat.

There are two panels covering the open back area you see in that photo there too.

its better to be safe than sorry. I would be worried about it sliding out. i would definitely strap it or temp fix it cause accidents happen!

Glad to hear more people in the state are in the hobby. Wish I had known about your junked cab warehouse find before I ordered my kit, haha.

Update for anyone who was curious... I ended up having a friend come over so we could test it out and be capable of grabbing the monitor if it started to slip. It's not an ideal position, but it's not going anywhere. With the bottom rail of the chasis over the bezel mount on the kit, it was very sturdy.

Certainly not 'move it around' sturdy, but good enough that I was able to beat Moonwalker before my mounting kit showed up, haha.
