Title: contact cleaners
Post by: kardenm on June 09, 2010, 11:39:09 am
Can anyone recommend a spray good for cleaning and protecting electrical contacts, connectors, etc.?  Especially board edge connectors and harness connectors that connect various items to a monitor chassis??

Deoxit has worked well for me. It cleans, lubricates and leaves a protective coating. Another hint if you have an edge connector is to use a magic eraser sponge. They work woders removing light oxidation / grime from contacts.

Thanks much.

Yes, I do also use an eraser to clean edge connectors but wonder if there is a product I can apply to keep them from loosing good connection as they spend time in use on site.

Also, where can I buy Deoxit?

My can of Deoxit came from Fry's Electronics but they're only west coast. A google product search returns lots of results including Radio Shack. It comes in a spray or can form. About the eraser I meant this (http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Cleaning-Accessories/Magic-Eraser/ID=prod728176-product?V=G&ec=frgl_&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku728163), not an actual eraser (and don't use it on plated contacts). Be careful using a pencil eraser to clean contacts, it will leave behind a residue that increases the rate of oxidation.
