Title: CP print material.. how about this?
Post by: JoeB on August 01, 2003, 02:36:01 pm
I went to the regular Kinkos, and the guy told me the longest lasting thing they print on is Vinyl. I have a couple of questions about this:

1) Is anything printed on this color accurate as paper is?
2) How durable is this material? If glued on the CP, is a plastic type cover (Lexan, plexiglass, etc) still required?

Thanks.

I'm not sure about most of your questions, but I know alot of people get their sideart printed on vinyl.

I'm pretty sure the vinyl they use at Kinko's is adhesive-backed. You may wanna check...

Yes, you'll probably still want plexi/lexan covering. It's durable, but not THAT durable. Plus it could still peal up.

The kinkos I went to did not print on vinyl... I did normal paper, had it laminated for 10$ extra and then put lexan over it.

I am happy with the results, but I hope it is durable!!

If you got something like that printed up for side art, how would you cover it so it didnt peel?  Clear coat?

If it's adhesive vinyl it's not likely to peal from the sides. It's a whole other story for the control panel, though. That takes a lot more abuse.

check the artwork forum.  This came up several times.  The quick summary:
1.  Vinyl will wash out colors a little more than paper.

2.  Kinkos can print a sample for you to see if you like it.

3.  Vinyl at Kinkos with or without an adhesive backing.

4.  If you go to kinkos, talk with the guy running the sign, banner printing.  S/he will almost always know more than the people behind the desk and will help you out more.

5.  Their printers are cmyk (as most places are) and so the colors will not match with a RGB image.  The test sample helps here.

I used vinyl for my side art and it's held up for over a year, but people aren't touching it all the time.
I printed my cp art on paper from kinkos because the color matched better and it is covered by plexi for protection anyway.

Hope it helps. :)

I would think that uncovered paper on a control panel wouldn't last much more than a few weeks of regular use. Uncovered vinyl would probably last up to 6 months, but probably not that long. It also depends on how it is installed and how good of a print job you have.

Check the Artwork forum.  There's talk of using clear contact paper on top of graphics if you don't want to use lexan on cp.
