Title: Gap between control panel and glass?
Post by: rlemmon on June 01, 2010, 01:31:49 am
Hi guys. What do you use to cover the gap between the control panel and monitor glass? I have seen a part that looks like it might be angle iron or something.

 What do you use? Thanks

I am not at that point in my build yet but I am going to either use a piece of aluminum (painted flat black) angle iron or a piece of molding with dowels drilled into it so you can lift it off to get into the monitor from the front.

I thought about angle iron but im not sure of it will work. I need to get the new plexiglass in first to check out how big the gap will be.

It dosent seem to be a z bracket.

I was also wondering what I would use on my next upcoming build to cover the gap. Angle iron or some kind of metal molding would look alright but I can just picture someone closing the CP with force(mine is hinged at the front) and it just smacking the plexi since its so hard. Is there not some sort of rubber gasket that you could attach to the end of the cp that would push up against the plexi and create a seal? Almost like weather stripping or something, think of the gasket between a car door and the window.

Just a thought.

I drew up a simple model of a long rectangle of aluminum w/ several thru holes, got it machined, & then had it bent to a certain angle.

Spray painted it black, screwed it to the back face of my panel, & put some foam tape on the surface that squeezes the monitor glass against the cabinet frame.

I'm using what I believe to be a rubber carpet transition strip on mine.  They're available at Home Depot, etc.  I've cut it down to fit.

Unfortunately, no good pictures, but it works great.

Rubber carpet?  That sounds like fun!   ;D

rubber...carpet...transition. :)

I'll see if I can get pics up, but it works great.  It's very flexible, easily cuttable, and finishes it off nicely.

Of course, my cabinet is now in pieces, but I'll get pics of how it works.

I used foam weatherstripping which works fine for me, but I'm interested in seeing what this carpet transition stuff is.

I'll try to get a picture tonight, but this is pretty much what I used:

I am not sure if it's the same thing as a "rubber carpet transition strip" but I used a black "rubber base board", or black "rubber base moulding".   I don't have a picture of my own, but it's something like this:
http://www.usmarkerboard.com/Rubber-Base-Molding-for-Base-Cabinets/262 (http://www.usmarkerboard.com/Rubber-Base-Molding-for-Base-Cabinets/262)

I'm sure they have all different kinds.  Mine is curved in just the right ways.  I've attached a (poorly illustrated) picture of what the curve is like.  The curves are exaggerated to make a point about what it does.   It curves and covers the gap and is flush with the CP, and then it curves towards the monitor and is flush with the glass.

You can find base board or moulding stuff like this at any hardware store that works with flooring.  And it's usually cheap too.

Just another option I guess.
