Title: Coin Door Question: Home Version vs Mech
Post by: dawolv on May 19, 2010, 02:06:34 pm
Hey Guys,
I need some advice on these two style of doors and cant find a write up one.
Home Arcade:
=========================Home Version======================================

=========================MECH ONE===========================================

I will not be using the door to operate a 'Coin In' switch but I do want the Coin Eject Button to light up.
I also do not need the Coin Collection box since I wont be using coins (I think the novelty of it will wear off quickly)

Does anyone know the dimensions of these doors?
Does the Home Version open?
Can we use the GGG NovaGem Coin Button?

Thanks!

I actually have the dual slot home version.

I'm not at my house, wont be back till tomorrow maybe but i do know the door does open. you could light them via LED by just throwing an one down there i assume. the coin buttons do push in but the coin doors a the bottom do not. as far as the GGG button, im not sure on that either. Hope this was helpful somewhat

ill try to get measurements tomorrow if someone does not get to it before hand

As far as I know the home versions are blocked off on the coin rejects (as shown in the picture) and are more for show (no mechs)...at least that is what I thought.

You can EASILY find a better option that the home coin door for less money (I've never paid that much for an actual coin door ... seems silly to pay more for a door that doesn't even work). The door obviously opens, but why bother?  Might as well just get a sticker from GGG.

Cruise eBay and BST -- it is pretty damned easy to find a cheap coin door that will do what you want and there are lots of tutorials if you get one in need of deep restoration.

WBHarrison - Thanks! I would like the Two Coin Door one as well but I am worried about the size since my wife made me slim down the original version I had in mind.

Which by the way *JUST TODAY* she looks at the side that has been cut out and tells me "Hey... that is small"  :angry:

The Mech one would be cool just "to have" but that one is like $90 (I can buy cooler stuff for that much :laugh:), there are some on ebay true enough but they are pretty expensive for the condition they are in (no blast box here) but ... hmm... *looks around for the wife*  >:D

The Home Version however is $32.95 from  Arcade Emulator  (http://www.arcadeemulator.net) and its new and should give me some more room inside the case and still give it a retro look.
If WBharrison is right...I could rig up some LEDs and wire them up behind the coin buttons though I would like to use those Novagems ... /sigh too many choices.

I agrees with ya Cheffo. I really don't see the point in paying more for a less functioning coin door.

Although I didn't state it above, I agree as well. I got two coin doors for about $20 on Ebay (although the shipping stung) but after fixing them up they look like new...and best of all they are functional :)

Definitely cheaper alternatives out there.

I bought the single home version from Happ a while back.  I believe the measurements are the same as a real "small single coin door" from Happ.  I think it's just the same door, just minus the coin mechs and hook ups and etc... See here for the measurements:
http://www.happcontrols.com/coindoors/40005500_exploded.htm (http://www.happcontrols.com/coindoors/40005500_exploded.htm)
You might have to contact Happ to confirm they are the same, even though I'm fairly certain they are...

I personally feel that it was an ok investment.  I just don't like the look of a sticker instead of a real coin door.  I agree with others though, there are definitely cheaper ways to get a real coin door though.  But I just didn't feel confident (read too lazy) at the time to restore a damaged or used coin door, so I opted just to get a brand new one that's ready to go.

As far as the coin door still opening, even though it's not "functional" I find that it is still very useful.   I put a board behind my coin door that hides certain administrative buttons and a volume knob.   Then I just leave the key in the lock.  Very handy to have these buttons still available, yet hiding.

This is correct, however, I believe you can just remove those silver bars, shown in the picture, from behind the coin doors and they would open.  I thought the doors still had the little door flaps attached at the top, so the only thing preventing them from moving was that bar. Although, I haven't done so myself as I have no need for the doors to actually open since I am not using coins either.

And to light the eject buttons, I had to rig something up for this.   Basically that piece of wood I have mounted behind the coin door also has two leds mounted to the top of it.   Once the door is closed, the LEDs line up with the coin buttons and light them up.   The board is far enough away so that if you push in the eject buttons, it won't hit the lights, but still close enough where it lights up the buttons nicely.

 :cheers:

Sorry, forgot about your last question...

Can we use the GGG NovaGem Coin Button?

Anything is possible, of course, but I can't fully comment on how easy it would be to complete.   I can confirm that you can unscrew and remove the existing coin eject buttons.   But the hole it leaves behind are larger than the NovaGem coin button.  So you'd have to find a way to fill the square holes, and mount the buttons on top of that.   So, I guess, it's doable, just not easily.   If you're not willing to buy and restore an old coin door, my guess is that you might not be willing to modify this coin door very much either...

Hi,

ive got a coin door for sale. its hardly been used. Ive not long stripped my old machine down and made a bar top one instead to save room because ive moved house. i fitted it with a single electronic mech instead. i brought this coin door from happ which is set up to take british 10p's, you can change them to take any coin. ive wired both mechanical mechs up so you just can connect it to a ipac. ive also added two standard machine bulbs on each of the slots. i will supply a bag of spare bulbs with it aswell.
