Title: Why doesnt MAME feel REALLY real?
Post by: Malenko on May 19, 2010, 08:25:15 am
I cant really explain it, but I was playing Marvel VS Capcom (genuine CPS2 hardware)on my KI1 cabinet to make sure it worked when I recieved the package. Then I was playing Marvel VS Capcom on my KI2 via MAME and it didnt feel the same. I have the same sticks and buttons but different monitors.

Anyone else feel this way or am I just weirder then I though?

Well there's always the possibility that your pc isn't quite fast enough to run the game well.... mame has an emulation bug..... your video card and/or the filter you are using causes an almost inpercievable visual difference or some other random thing.

In general though, mame is identical to the real game.  The few exceptions I can think of are vector games and games with an analog based sound system.

That doesn't guarantee that cps2 emulation is perfect enough though... I'm just saying in general.

Its a mind thing!

Kinda like actually having a real car vs a kit car. One is the original model and the other is just an 'emulation' of the original.

The computer is waaaaaay beyond whats needed for CPS2, but I know what you were getting at. The picture looks identical and for all intents and purposes its the same, but it doesnt FEEL the same. Its not just Marvel VS Capcom, its Killer Instinct 1&2, NBA Jam, Open Ice, Kung Fu, BreakThru, Wresletfest, Mortal Kombat 2, UMK3,etc,etc .

I first noticed this "feel" thing with Neo Geo, when I converted my unwanted NeoGeo cab into a MAME for a coworker. I was playing Samurai Shodown II via MAME on the original neogeo sticks, buttons, layouts and it just wasnt the same.I dunno, its like generic cereal or something, lol

Wel then I can assure you it's in your head.

A few of those games on your list still have emulation issues, particularly the mk games and the ki games... but the rest are pretty much dead on.

Now if you'd have complained about some of the sega ride-ons I would agree with you.... they all have timing issues.

I never said it wasnt, the point was to see if anyone else felt that way

It's got to be in your head.  I don't ever notice or think about the difference unless there is something off about the controls (like playing Tapper, for example).

Looks the same to me.

It might not be just in your head... I have a JAMMA cab and one of the games I run in P-47 Phantom Fighter.
I noticed the game feels significantly harder in MAME. I think the emulation speed is a bit off on some games.
Its subtle enough that you wouldn't notice if you hadn't played the dedicated games in a while, but there is definitely something to it.

It doesn't make me like MAME any less, because most of the games are 90%+ right, but its not perfect.
I'm just getting my gameroom together now and the JAMMA and MAME cab are in different rooms. When I have them together, I'll try to film P-47 playing on both machines at the same time.

I think for some games, there are dip switches that can choose how hard the game is, right ??
maybe those settings are somehow not "default" ???

Personally, I play cyberball, and it feels close enough to the real thing for me.

as for other games, I was never that good, or played that much to know the difference.

FWIW - MK2 is ---smurfing--- horrible in any version of MAME. I've given up hope of building a MAME cabinet because this is one of the games I'd want to play the most. I've settled for looking for a MK 2 upright first, then working on the cabinet later if I feel that it's a wise choice.

I've personally found the audio to be the thing that makes it feel less real side by side with no audio games feel the same but when the music is heard it doesnt feel the same i don't know what it is maybe the PC is too clear on some games or maybe there's little artifacts that the audio has that aren't present on the emulated version

It gotta be in your head, I got my MAME CP put on two days ago and the first game I played was MVC to see how it compares to the old one and it feels the same to me.

BTW you got any picks of you cab converted over?

yeah I keep saying I know its in my head, I was seeing if other people felt the same way, lol.

I didnt convert a cab, I just popped the CPS2 in my KI1 cab since my KI1 board is dead.

AFAIK you just replace the encrypted roms with unencrypted ones. the guy on CPS2shock used to do it for like 18 bux, but that was on his website like 2 years ago. called pheonixing

Hmm.  Could it fix my version, too?  I have an Xmen Vs. Street Fighter (Hispanic) that I bought on eBay without fully reading the description ( :banghead:).  I'd much rather it be in English, lol.

A hispanic SF2?  What, does Raul square off against Chola or something?

No, all the character names are the same, but the victory quotes (and beat-the-game ending text) are in Spanish...

I would pay money for something like this.

if you are just going to have a ripped rom mounted then whats the point of using a real CPS2 set?

its the same data, just not encrypted so the battery isnt needed. Theres no emulation or anything involved just the removal of the need for the battery.

For the few games I've been able to play out in the wild since getting to know them on my MAME cabinet, they usually feel pretty identical, but there are little things that can make them feel different.

If you run a different ROM version in MAME compared to whatever's on the PCB of said game, that can account for lots of subtle differences.

If your not running your MAME cabinet on an arcade monitor, it won't look right.

If you don't use original controls, comparing a MAME experience to a dedicated upright will always pale.

I'm using U360s in my MAME cabinet which is probably the best general purpose arcade stick out there.  But even though it plays so many games so well, it doesn't play any of them authentically.

maybe it doesn't feel real anymore because we're not kids anymore.. and we don't have our friends or siblings with us watching as we play. The game may be identical, but we aren't identical to that person we remember in those memories.

even the real arcade games don't feel real

Definately a valid point

So then what's the point in MAME emulation, or arcade collecting?

That's the question have to ask ourselves Frigo..

We need to find out howgaming fits into our life now and what makes it a good game today, rather than always striving towards what we once had.

So get new buddies to play with, or convince your wife that it's fun, or have some kids so you can teach them to play and make brand new memories!

 :burgerking:

I still definitely think our age or place in life influences how we experience particular games. I was playing the new Zelda on DS in bed the other day, me being a 27 year old made me feel a little weird that I was playing a game where the main focus was a chu chu train. I know that wouldn't have even crossed my mind when i was a kid. But playing halo or god of war 3 was no issue.
