A few months back I bought this cabinet off of CraigsList for $200. It is a Marvel vs Street Fighter Cabinet converted from at least two previous games (Originally Robotron, and there was a label on the back for Shadow Dancer). The monitor has discoloration issues that degaussing didn't fix, but the real issue was the massive amount of scratches on the tube itself.

The machine works great. Coin mechanism, and marquee work perfectly.
I ordered a 1xxx in 1 Jamma PCB and picked up a 21" Sony Trinitron Monitor off Craigslist which I decased.
This morning I picked up the two pieces of Plywood (actually MDO) for the shelf and frame of the monitor.
Tonight i hope to mount the shelf, and tomorrow I am going to get the frame cut back at the hardware store.
Down the line I want to replace the controls and the panel with it as it looks pretty terrible.
-
Looks like a Williams cabinet, but not an original Robotron. Robotron had a slightly different cabinet shape, especially the angle around the sides near the CP.

Good luck on this project! Are you going to do anything to restore the cabinet itself? Looks like you got a bit of scratches and chipping around the bottom and backside...
-
To be honest, I suck with the hardware side of things. I would like to repaint the coin door and replace one of the coin return buttons (maybe both). But first and foremost I want to play some games! The sticks and buttons will be replaced as well as the control panel. I just need to figure out how to do so. The Plexiglas will also be replaced this week or next after I make the frame for the new monitor and get the shelf in.
Any ideas for bezels as this new monitor will be significantly smaller than the old one?
Tonight is going to be the first real difficult part of removing the old monitor and putting in the shelf.
Basically, I need to be able to work on it in the room it is now. Maybe down the road I will do more.
-
Just got done mounting the shelf. I am really happy with the way it looks. Going to pick up some 3/8" plywood tomorrow for the frame. here are some pictures of the process:

Picked up some 1/4" MDF this morning for the frame of the monitor. Hoping to have it cut tonight.
Also hoping the 1xxx-in-1 comes today so I can get that hooked up.

I like where this is going, and I love worklogs with lots of pictures, something that I often neglect to do.
One complaint though- you call it a MAME cabinet, but it uses a 1XXX-in-1 board, so it's TECHNICALLY not a MAME cabinet. :blah:

Fixed! Good point.

The XXX-in-1 boards use MAME.

Getting ready to cut the frame now.
Also ordered the two stick and 40 button package from Xarcade.
Here is the piece of MDF I am using:

Removed the Marvel vs Street fighter and CPS2 A board:
Outlined the monitor onto some graph paper to make the cuts on the board:

So... The cutting didn't go perfectly. I am going to cut 1/8" off the bottom tomorrow to get it looking a bit nicer. Then going to spray paint it black.
A Bezel will be covering any imperfections. That along with the tinted glass should make it look pretty nice.

Cut off 3/16" off the bottom and now it fits perfectly!
Spray painted and drying overnight now. Can't wait to see the final product tomorrow (at least phase 1).

where'd you order your 1xxx-in-1 board? Love all the pics and I think this should turn out quite well!
-
I got it from Jamma Boards.
Well, the board did not show up today sadly...
Looks like the cabinet is good to go for the install though. I hooked up my dreamcast and played some Marvel vs Capcom and some other games. LOOKED AMAZING!!!

Also, I put that piece of MDF in the cabinet to mount the components like this:

Which I saw on another forum.
-
And here is a video of the machine with the modifications in action:

...Nice but your video is making me dizzy... :lol
No very cool, I need to get me a dream cast from somewhere... I wish they caught on (damn you SONY)
-
Sorry about the shaky video, just wanted to show a little more than just the pictures.
-
OK, been a few days since the last post.
Here is what i have done.
1. Put the mount in for the xxxx in 1 components and mounted them.
Sadly, I got a bad drive with the board so I am waiting for a replacement. But soon, I will be playing some SUNSET RIDERS and SF II.
2. I also replaced the mono speaker and shelf with a new piece of MDF that matches the original piece and stereo computer speakers I decased:
I got the 40 button/2 joystick package from Xarcade, so next will be to replace the control panel. This I will need help with. Any plans around to make a replacement to what I have? Preferable something wider? Also and ideas for console art?

Any particular reason you bought X-arcade joysticks and buttons? Many people here (myself included) feel they are of inferior quality.
-
I just saw a recommendation from one of the posts. What else would you go with for my machine. Need 6 buttons per player and joysticks for fighting games as well as older games.
-
Happs. All the way. Don't buy directly from Happs, buy from divemaster (a member here).

I bought the same Xarcade kit you did years ago, and couldn't even do Ryu's uppercut with them.

You'll be much much happier in the end. :applaud:

Think going with all black controls will work well?

Think going with all black controls will work well?
It all depends on your control panel art, I suppose. Black goes with just about anything, though, so that would be a safe bet.

wanna sell the CPS2 B board? I have a MvC, would like to add MvSF to the collection, already have the A board, so thats optional

Sorry I already sold it on Ebay.

New Drive came today and it works! I now have a working xxxx in 1.
One small issue, only the top 3 buttons of my control panel work...
My Jamma was wired for a CPS2 and worked fine the way it was with 6 buttons, but obviously now I can only use 3.
I know the board came with a connector for buttons 5 and 6, but that still leaves one button left. Any ideas?
Thanks!
-
look at the jamma wiring diagram in the manual. on jamma harness there is buttons 1 2 and 3 for each player and the next pin is an "extra" or "bonus" or whatever. that can be button 4
-
OK been a while since updating. I installed a fan for the hard drive and a fan for the board to keep things cool.
Still need to get buttons 4-6 working sadly...
Sorry for the iPhone pics:

I like it alot better with the black buttons. Did you get all your buttons working yet?
-
Ya, just got all 6 working a few minutes ago! This thing is amazing. Street Fighter feels perfect.
Seriously everyone needs one of these xxxx in 1 jamma boards. No links to these boards please, they are not legal as far as I understand it. --- saint is working on a 2000+ game image for the hard drive that would blow the Killer Edition out of the water. He is accepting some beta testers now.
-
Sorry about the link, I did not know we couldn't post to there.
Anyways, I am looking into getting some side art and a new marquee. What do you guys like from http://www.gameongrafix.com/ (http://www.gameongrafix.com/)
I was thinking about this one: http://www.gameongrafix.com/products/collage-side-art (http://www.gameongrafix.com/products/collage-side-art)
or this: http://www.gameongrafix.com/products/fighting-classic-side (http://www.gameongrafix.com/products/fighting-classic-side)
Both have matching marquees. What do you think?
