Title: smallest joystick/buttons available?
Post by: tony.silveira on May 10, 2010, 11:46:25 pm
hi all,

of done some searching but seem to come up with all the sites we are familiar with.

i'm curious as to what the smallest joysticks and buttons that are available?  for last gen consoles, i would love to add a digital pad but i doubt there is a mountable version available so i'm left thinking of adding a small stick.

any thoughts?  thanks

this would be a good hack.
It's small and uses same switches as the regular Happs/any that uses microswitches.

I have one and very simple to hack.

Happ has a sub-min joystick (http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/50275500.htm) I'm keeping in my 'future use' list.

Mountable D-Pad:

That's cool. Could see that for a jukebox project. Just wish there were other colors.

You can also shorten a normal stick, and fit it with a 25mm ball.

franco b, your the man, a mountable control pad, go figure.  thanks for the link.

now if only  could find an under-mountable 12 key (0-9 and #, *) phone like key pad, all my console emu's would have buttons without having to use shifted keys

I think I've seen such phone keypads at a local surplus shop - apparently from cell phones or something.  Not sure what you'd do with it, but I can get more info if interested.

please do, i would appreciate it!

i never thought of a cell phone keypad.  i could potentially hack it and it would be very small, exactly what i'd be looking for.

as for the need, i'd like to add a small keypad for console emu's that have them, atari 5200/jaguar, intellivision, colecovision, etc.

any info you could get is appreciated!

was thinking of those consoles, but I've never heard of anyone trying to emulate it.

I'll run over to the surplus store asap, maybe buy up a few, dont think they were expensive by any measure.

Crappy cell phone pics attached.

The keypads are without any electronics, so unless you have something for them to trigger, they are useless.  Sorry.

The dark pad there is the kind of thing that would normally go under such keypads, but alignment of buttons is very off, size is off, etc.  You could take that dark pad and make an overlay tho - its maybe 2"x3" with a 5x8 grid of buttons.  Only $1.50 i think...tempted to get a few just for kicks.

The last item caught my eye, might be a nice way to add vol. control

Withering thread, but today I happened to see a Lucent phone on Craigslist and it made me think of this.  I bet an old touch tone phone keypad could be easily hacked to work with an iPac or somesuch, and it's designed to be undermounted (granted not under 3/4" MDF...).

Am I being dumb here or could you not just use a [USB number pad? (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-Digital-Keyboard-Number-Pad-18-Keys-Keypad-f-Laptop-/270580350078?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_KeyboardsMice&hash=item3effd87c7e)]

old phone, of course!  i have an old beast like that lying around.

i have looked into a usb keypad also.  the thing is, i have yet to find one that would be easily under panel mounted without a lot of DIY hackery.  also, usb keypads are 19 keys, looking to add just add the 12 that are used on the consoles that have them.  at last count, here are the systems i have on my cab that use them:

5200
jaguar
astrocade
colecovision
arcadia
