Title: Joystick Options
Post by: Lumpy on July 31, 2003, 10:44:59 am
Just so that I don't get flamed, I did read Oscars reviews.  I would like to know what people think about the Super vs the Competition stick.  Who has used both and which one they like better and why.  Right now I only have a Super Joystick and plan on building my 4 player control panel and need 3 or 4 more.

I bought the Super first cause I heard about the 4 or 8 way option.  Well that's a pain to switch so now I plan on buying just a 4 way.  Do I stay with the supers or go with the Competition.  Also are the joysticks on Bob Roberts site new?  I play a lot of Simpsons, TMNT, and Sunset Riders.  However when this is built I see a lot of Street Figher being played.

AFAIK, the sticks on Bob Robert's site is new.  I bought a pair of Ultimates from him.  They are new.  I recently swapped them out for a pair of Competition sticks.  Much better feel and control than the Ultimates.

I used the J-stick, Comp, and Super.

I like Comp most in normal 8 way games...
I like J-stick as a dedeciated 4 way....

or maybe you can search for previous posts...
there are quite a few posts about stick feels....

I'm pretty sure all his parts are new unless stated otherwise or shown in a picture to be used. Everything I've gotten from him is new. From what I understand, he orders from Happ in bulk.

As for one joystick vs another, I've used the supers and will probably go with the competitions for my upgrade because of the handle style. I don't like the super handle for fighting games very much. It's a funky quasi bat/ball thing.

I remember reading a lot of post about this topic a few months back, but couldn't find them.  I did a search, but couldn't seem to pull anything up.

Lumpy - I just bought those to ultimate's off the guy in NJ. I'll let you know how they turn out, but a lot of people seem to swear by the Competition joysticks.

hyiu,

Thank you for finding them for me.  This would be so much easier if I just had more money to play with.  I'm guessing thats a common problem.

For those of you who have played with both: If I buy 2 Competitions (Player 1 and Player 2) will players 3 and 4 be able to tell the difference in 4 Player games with Super Controls.  Hopefully that came out right.

Basically am I going to be able to tell a big difference with moving them diagonally?

finding the links is no pblm... as long as you search the right keyword....  ;)

yes.. you'll be able to tell the difference... Super and Comp

Super is a little bit shorter... Comp is a little bit longer...

also, once I play (I can't guarantee anyone else, but I do), I notice the difference...

in Super, I DON'T know whether I'm hitting the diagonal or not, But in Comp, I can feel myself hitting the diagonal....(but not too awarkard...)

J-stick is like a square.... so, easy to feel the diagonal... but need some getting used to in doing circular motion....

(anyway... its all personal feel... and after you put it in and play with it for a few days, you'll probably adapt...)

if you're putting 2 super and 2 comp...
1 thing to watch out is if you're going to play those 2 joystick games.... Robotron, Karate Champ... etc...
I would like to hold 2 comp or 2 super (I guess...)
so, you'll need to arrange your CP "wisely".... hee hee....
 ;) ;D

Doh!!!  Man this all sounded so easy until I started thinking.   :-\

Does anyone have a good example of a 4 Player control panel that didn't go off the deep end.  I don't have a trackball or spinner planned until well down the road, so a simple 4 joystick example would be great.  I'm trying to go through all of them again on the example page (didn't think of bookmarking the first time around.)  Then I might be able to get a little work done inbetween reading posts.   ;D

Ok here's the plan, make player one a competition or a perfect 360 ( that's going to be your joystick ) and make 2,3 and 4 some crappy joystick that you got for $5 somewhere.
That way you kick ass everytime you play your mates and nobody knows why LMAO.

If you want a 4-player control panel how about checking out real 4-player arcade games like NBA Jam. It gives you a perspective for the positioning of the outer 2 controls and it's not a huge thing. Also check the Gauntlet CP's (any of them will do fine).

The hard thing is that there aren't to many arcades left around here where I could go and measure things.  The only ones are at the mall and they all have new fangeled games.  No classics...what a dissapointment.  I've found a lot of pictures of NBA Jam and NFL Blitz on the internet but haven't found the dimensions.  So if anyone could post them or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Other wise I'm going to have to just start going from bar to bar looking for these....hmmm... maybe that wouldn't be so bad.
