I managed to find this cab on my search for cabinet plans some time ago. Found the guys website. Unfortunately, I don't think I saved the url.
To be fair, there is a story behind this cab. This is all from rote memory so I may definitely have a couple of details wrong.
It was made at the height of the NES era. Well before this kid had any access to any of the information, software or hardware readily available to us today. He drew the plans and built the cab in shop class. This photo was taken so he could get his picture into Nintendo Power magazine. He purportedly had a complete writeup on how he constructed the cab but the magazine editors butchered the whole thing down to less than a paragraph. To wit, the subtle point here is this cab is over twenty years old.
The cab is complete. It's been painted black (still no T-Molding) and his mother, some sort of graphic designer, painted the artwork.
When the kid hit his college years, he sold off his entire NES collection (to pay for something). A decision he regretted ever since. Since then, he's been on the prowl to rebuild that collection and return this cab to its intended purpose.
-
Now I remember why I didn't save the URL. It's already featured on this website on the Hall of Fame.
It's Nannu's Nintendo Cabinet (http://www.willyliliana.com/NES%20Cabinet/NES%20Cabinet.htm)

That sounds right - I actually think he is a member here too. I remember that issue of Nintendo Power from way back when and I always thought it would be the coolest thing ever to have a cab of my very own one day.
-
oh great. I'm an a**hole. I feel terrible. sorry!
...it actually doesn't look so bad after it was finished. AND he built it when he was 13...when I was 13, I could barely build a coherent sentence...
That's the last time i link something that a friend sends me off reddit.
:whap ---> me

Yeah, it's Nanuu (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1068). He hasn't been around since October '09.
Some of the stuff he's done since is impressive. I don't know if it's him or his wife, but those cakes on his site puts my cooking to shame.

That's the problem with the tubes sometimes. Things get taken out of context all the time.
The only reason I remember this cab so well is because it was built in the mid-80's. Way ahead of what most people were doing with games. Hell, when I was 13, I would never have even dreamed of building such a beast and my father was a carpenter with mad wood working skillz. I think the most complex thing I built when I was 13 involved a large quantity of LEGO blocks.
-
That cab is most epic.
-
I remember reading this in Nintendo Power Magazine!
that was an awesome project, particularly for the time!

Lesson to be learned: Don't be in a hurry to mock ... you don't want to ---fudgesicle--- with the Ace Of Cakes. :whap
EDIT: I see that the cakes were mentioned in prior posts. Oops ... but they still rock!

Shame on me. :'(

Now go sit in the corner and think about what you've done and don't come out until the Canucks have won a playoff series against Chicago.
-
Oh this post. That is an odd coincidence. I just happen to be on vacation and was playing on the Boop cabinet at my parents house, gave me the arcade itch to hop on and see what's happening. Didn't know this post was here until you mentioned it. No offense taken at all, there is no real defense for that picture :). Though I do find it pretty amusing.

Hey Nanuu, you know you made a lot of teenagers jealous when you showed this on nintendo power?

I bought an XEGS instead of an NES. I wonder if my life would have changed if I witnessed something like that back then. AtariAge quietly died so us Atari fans never had a sporting chance.

Jesus, someone had to bring those shorts up? I had a few given to me from someone on the East coast. I thought I really popped with those shorts since no one else had them. Anything remotely resembling those shorts wouldn't start appearing in my city for at least another two summers.

Well thanks! I never expected that to make it in NP when I sent them the letter, I was amazed when my issue arrived.

Looks like the cab(?) my dad made for me for my Atari 2600.
Very similar.

I was expecting the young man in the pic (nanuu), would turn out to be a young Saint.
