I've had a dedicated PC/Jukebox for a couple years, a 1TB HDD (almost full of MP3s) with 2.1 Klipsch speakers and an X-FI Extreme Music card.
I'm currently working on the cabinet (I'll post the pictures soon, I'm still working on it).
Originally I was planning to just use the old standby keyboard/mouse/LCD, but I've decided that a touchscreen would be a better solution, but I'm not familiar with them.
Can someone recommend a specific brand/model? I tried a ePay search but got them from $10 to several hundred.
A 15" is fine for my purpose, but I'm really on a budget for finishing this project. Any suggestions?
Also, what's the preferred touchscreen/juke software? Will I still need a keyboard/mouse? (they'll still be available, just not convenient with this design) .
Thanks guys, getting close.

Im going to make 2 suggestions:
1) An ELO Touchscreen for your touchscreen issue.

I have bought 10 from that seller and they've all been great! Hopefully your in the USA and shipping wont kill you.
You need either a USB cable or one of these (depending on what type is sold to you)

and a driver for it:

2) E-Touch Jukebox (sometime referred to as Freebox, but had a name change) is my choice for jukebox software. There are many Jukebox programs and I encourage you to try them all. Some are free (you get what you pay for) and some are $25.00 (US) or more. E-Touch is $25.00 and is a great piece of eye candy and user friendly.

Alot of us try to be mouse/keyboard free so we Simple Touch Front End when exiting the jukebox program to add music. you will have to configure it to do what you want, like bring up the on-screen keyboard.

I havent had a keyboard or mouse hooked up to my jukebox in about 10 months.
Just my $.02

Fordman, thanks for the feedback, that's excellent!
I was researching the 15" ELO's and didin't know the difference in the various models, know which one was best, or who was a reliable source. You answered all of my questions, and then some! THANKS!
I'll definately be using your suggestions. (and posting pics as it comes together).
btw, (with a name like Fordman) I though you might enjoy my next project, starting after the first of the year.

I joined a local club last year and purchased all of the drivetrain (IRS w/reworked 302, & T5 5-speed). Ordering the kit, end-of-year. That'll keep me busy for awhile!

whats ur elo look like I have one and I was curious

I use a 17" CRT ELO. Having to do it again, I would've went LCD instead. But it works fine...surprisingly fine. I'm by no means a tech guru, so I don't know if I got lucky, or they just seem to set themselves up. But I would go bigger if you can. The LCD's look bigger, so if you do go 15", at least go LCD. If I ever build version 2.0, that's what I'll be using.
I use EJukebox by Audiosoft. It is a pay software. I would also suggest trying a few out. But don't invest too much time mapping your MP3's to any one until you make the decision. Once you spend a few hours setting up songs, you're unlikely to move onto something else. EJukebox had a specific feature that really wasn't available on others at the time...I think it was displaying the playlist, but I'm not sure. It also has its share of shortcomings. Only you know what your vision is. It's a fun project though, maybe my favorite so far.

Hello,
I paid $125 USD for a used 17" ELO on ebay. It has a few light scuff marks, but the image is bright & sharp. It hasn't given me any problems. ;D
A CRT would have been way too heavy and would have added inches to the depth of my cabinet.
Here's the ELO model/specs of the one I have:

Some things came up and I didn't jump on a touchscreen when I should have. The link above expired.
Back in the market for one.
I've been looking @ 15" again (that's what I think I need for this project), but the prices are anywhere from $50 to $600 plus on ePay.
What's a good model#? (anything to avoid?) Is USB for the touchscreen component, not the LCD itself, correct?
Can anyone refer me to a seller they had good luck with? (I emailed one guy about the condition of his "used" LCD and he said he doesn't have time to inspect them all, refer to the picture in his Ad (yeah, a 2" x 2" picture is a BIG help!)
Thanks for your help so far, good information.

yes usb is for the touchscreen and it is serial to usb or usb printer port style to usb

Thanks gryhnd!
That looked like a good deal, so I bought one of the ELO 1545L models for $50 BIN.
Looks pretty straightforward, I downloaded the drivers and manual, but I'm not finding the Calibration software. Any links?
-
It's part of their driver software and installation.

it should be in control panel with the drivers it says elo touchscreen

I've had a few ELO's. I have an open frame 19 inch with a stand on my desktop now running windows 7 with a bunch of touch games free to download from Microsoft.
My screen saver is called a surface lagoon. Little fish swim around. You can drag or tap the water and it ripples and the fish scatter. I sold a few 19 inch and 15 on ebay this summer.
They are the best quality from what I've seen. Mine has serial or Usb. Their website has all the drivers you'll need. touchtunes, a digital jukebox distributor, started replacing
all their LCDs with ELO's a couple years back because of the quality, they are almost always on in bars. They're also in most point of sale systems I've noticed. They have my vote for quality.
