If I want my tb plate flush with my mdf how should I do it? I know some people use a router, but I have never used one before. Is there another option or is a router my best option?

IMO a router is your best option. Some people have cut recesses into MDF with chisels with good success. It may take a little skill to get the hang of it though. The router option is dirt simple.
Those are probably your two best choices. The chisel will work, I'd prefer the router though. You'll find tons of uses for it after you get it. (including more uses on your cabinet)

A router is definately the easiers. You set it to a depth and the recess will be that depth everywhere.
I used a combination of a router and dremel.

Like others said, it's possible to use a chisel but you need to be pretty good with it. I used a router, and it wasn't too hard.
The other option is to get 1/16" thick laminate or other cover to put over the MDF. Then you'd just need to cut the square out of the laminate without worrying about depth, unlike the other two ways.
