I thought the main draw to Avatar was the 3D and that the story was pretty much the same as many other movies.  Since TV's are not yet in 3D, is there really a reason to pick up a copy of it immediately?

I knew they were announced, but didn't realize they were already released.  Anyways, does anyone here have a 3D TV and is a 3D version of the movie available?  I'm guessing no on both counts.

I thought Avatar was going to be the first "3D only home release" movie

Yeah, then they realized they had to actually MAKE money off the home release.

I never once read that it would be only 3d, just that it would be the first to utilize 3D TVs.

Same here. I was just playing off PBJ's quote.

Seriously . . . Avatar was formulaic/mediocre at best.  At best.  It was really quite awful.  The only reason to see it was for the spectacle.  Why in the name of god would you want to repeat the experience on the small screen except without the spectacle?  You could just pop in Disney's Pocahontas for that.

I have to be honost I seen it in 3-D and I would have rather seen it in regular non 3-D

if anything the 3-D glass's just dimmed out and faded/dulled the color's for me.

I was never a 3-D fan anyhow becuase for me it does not make anything look 3-D or stick out any better... instead for me it just screws the color and crispness up for the films and makes them look even worse.

I've not seen Avatar, but have seen other 3-D movies. While I agree with it dimming the colors, I have to say that for most people, the 3-D has the most depth of anything yet. Coraline did this VERY well, showing the depth quite nicely.

Avatar's 3D wasn't nearly as good as Coraline's.

I realize how my post sounded now. I meant that R3alD 3D had the most depth yet, not Avatar.

Yeah, Coraline's 3D was amazing.

Hmm.  I watched Coraline in 2D, is it worth re-watching in 3D?

When it was in theaters in proper 3D, but not now.

Hell, no.

Avatar's 3D was FAR superior to Coraline's.

It wasn't at all about popping things out of the screen, but about giving the whole picture depth, and I have never seen a film as natural in 3D as Avatar.

I'll agree that the plot of the film wasn't really all that original, but so what. I was still entertained, and very little of anything you see out there is very original.

The plot wasn't just unoriginal.  It was bombastically stupid.  But the characters and dialog were WAY WAY worse than just unoriginal.  The bad guy was right out of a Resident Evil videogame he was such a ridiculous cliche.  He was the worst of the bunch, but the other characters were only marginally better.  And it was all so sappy and filled with nonsensical plot holes.

The 3D was underwhelming.  The special effects as a whole were amazing and I wouldn't hesitate for one microsecond to award the film an Oscar for such.  But the 3D was just run-of-the-mill.  It added little to the experience.

I will not argue the quality of the movie itself, as we are just going to disagree, because I enjoyed it, while you clearly didn't.

As for the technical aspect and the quality of the 3D... You are definitely in the minority.

Avatar = The single most disappointing film of my lifetime.

That said, I'll probably own it on Bluray at some point.

Other than a few slight instances of gimmicks, Coraline was ALL about depth.

I have seen them both.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Coraline, and its 3D was great. I was just more impressed with Avatar's 3D.

I was only taking issue with your post making it sound like Coraline was all about things popping off the screen. I have no way of comparing Avatar vs Coraline.

At risk of changing subject back to OP, wife bought me a blu ray copy of Avatar last night.

Was she pissed at you or something?  Does she want a divorce?  I never understand when people who supposedly love you just up and do something really really mean.  Deliberately.  Like . . . if she hates you, why'd she marry you?  And if she married you . . . ya know . . . just live with your choice or get divorced.  But don't go around doing horrible things to each other.   :P

Yeah, I've had Avatar for ages.  That's the tradeoff for campaigning for an Academy Award, especially for a movie that is released during the holiday season.  In order to get nominated, and especially in order to win, you have to send DVD screeners to the members of the academy (I can't remember how many there are, but I'm pretty sure it's more than 1000, maybe way more).  Without fail these are ripped and make their way to the torrent sites.  So you end up with a perfect-quality bootleg floating around not just before an official DVD release, but for holiday films it's out simultaneously with and sometimes even before the theatrical release.

I've seen Avatar. The effects were good and it looked great on Blu-Ray, but it was pretty disappointing. It felt way too fantasy and not enough sci-fi, which is really a deal-breaker for someone like me. The story is so incredibly cliched it's not even funny. I actually found myself rooting for the humans. It would be great for showing off your home theatre though.

EDIT: I was bored, so...

HarumaN isnt really being fair. Seeing as the only 3d full length content currently available (http://gizmodo.com/5491313/the-real-problem-with-3dtv-theres-nothing-to-watch-yet) (other than hooking up you pc to the tv) is Monsters Vs Aliens; and only if you buy a Samsung 3D glasses package. So saying that 3d isn't here yet is pretty accurate. The 3d version of avatar is coming in 2011 (http://gizmodo.com/5495470/avatar-3d-blu+ray-not-coming-until-2011) by the way.
