Is there a reason people dont put cup holder on their panels? When Im playing I have no where to put my beer.
-
Well, I did put cup holders on my CP and after a short while, beer (and probably jack and coke) was under the plexi and completely F'ed up my artwork (it was a glossy BOND, you can see the results here (http://www.pjlorenz.com/arcdoc/100407/destpanel.JPG)). Now, I'm rebuilding and using different materials for the CP and still plan on cup holders, but I am being very careful to be prepared for spills.

I did not install a cup holder because I didn't want any spills on the control panel. You could put a "bar table" next to the cabinet for drinks/food.

Beer does not belong in cups.
Its either in a glass (bottle = glass too), or in your throat.

I had cupholders on my old cab but when I rebuilt my new one there was really no good place for it so a possible alternative is if your cab is in a corner or a wall you could mount them on a wall away from the control panel to avoid those spills. But if married check with the boss first because we all know by this time the wives have had enough of arcade cabs......

Mine go on the side panels so it reduces the chance of CP damage (actually we haven't had a spill on the CP yet in 4 years). I use the flip down kind, like these (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PINBALL-ARCADE-Flip-down-drink-beverage-cup-holder_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2eac6828eeQQitemZ200461002990QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories).

I think it looks kind of tacky personally. I just have a table near the cab where the drinks can go down...besides if you are playing with one or more buddies there is plenty of time to get a sip in between your player ups.

That's why I like the flip up ones. When not in use they (mostly) disappear into the black sides of my cab.
I didn't have the option for a small table, and found people were putting drinks on top of the cab, on the CP etc. Um, no :-)

I think I'm alone in this respect, but I'm partial to bicycle water bottle cages: http://s242.photobucket.com/albums/ff97/infernolab/Arcade%20Game/ (http://s242.photobucket.com/albums/ff97/infernolab/Arcade%20Game/)
They're strong steel, they're sturdy, they're coated with bright colors to match any cabinet color scheme, & they hold a wide range of liquid containers (beer bottles, plastic cups, glass tumblers...pretty much anything but a wine glass...).
I have a flip-down plastic cupholder in my car and, although it feels & looks a bit flimsy, it does an admirable job of holding drinks--I'm pleasantly surprised to say that it's never dumped my drink.
Thanks,
-Jason

Good call ;)

+1 for the side tables
I guess if the cup holders more or less disappeared from site completely when they closed up, they'd be alright.
The sight of cabs with cupholders screwed to the sides though, for me, just seems a bit too, "I couldn't be bothered to think of anything nicer so what the hell". I guess if it was going in a game room with neon signs on the walls, or some similar bar-esque theme , it'd work ok.
Why not pop out holders on the sides of a control panel, like you seen in the dash boards of many new cars these days? Heck, why not rip one from a late model wreck at the scrapyard to build into a cab. THAT could be cool!

i have the flip down kind on the sides of my cabinet, but they very rarely ever get used. sometimes i'll use them to hold my cup of tokens, but other than that, they are pointless. when i repaint my cabinet, i'll be removing them and filling in the holes.

Although if the beer is free I'll lower my standards. ;D

Yeah... After reading this thread again and remembering the PITA of spills on my machine. I think I may forget the cup holders... And build/buy a side table/bar that goes along side.

extra token holders is where its at. The dilemma was always keeping them in your pocket and risking a heart attack as you try to pull out 3 tokens to continue in Time Crisis before the time runs out- or trying to balance them on top of the plexi and hoping that they don't roll/slide off the CP during an intense round of Arkanoid. ::)

Another +1 on the side table.
We serve martinis and cocktails at our place. After much careful consideration, I realized there is no way to balance a martini glass on the arcade cabinet that will prevent sloshing during gameplay and went with the side table approach. Hell, after a whole bunch of martinis, it's challenging enough getting the full drink to a guest without sloshing over the sides of the glass. :D

One of these years, I'm going to build a couple of wall mount shelves that are styled like a bar (you know, what a bar tender stands behind) and have several stainless steel cup holders and space for chip and dip bowls...

I did it. I loved having cupholders on my Mamenation (http://www.mamenation.com)cab, and they were great as token holders. I will miss cup holders a lot on my new slim LCD cab (http://sites.santoro.com/arcadereplay).

That is a really good CP with Cup Holders there...
