Hello everyone. Have been wanting to do a stand up for a few years now,and finally just got it going. I will using my original Xbox which is loaded with close to 1,000 games from nes, snes, n64, Genesis, gameboy.
The only thing I need to figure out is how to install MAME for Xbox on it.. :banghead:
Anyway,
Picked up this cabinet yesterday for free on Craigslist! It was a retrofit Street Fighter II
Mostly stable, some particle board flaking on the left side and back, but the guy said some Bondo will be just fine.
I've secured a 27" tv which I will need to take out of it's case to fit  It was free too, and has AV in, and AV out, so I can hook it up to a receiver and spekers :applaud:
Will be scrapping the current joystick console for an X-Arcade
Hoping to have at least the technical stuff wrapped up by my cookout in July....

Welcome! Nice score on the cab - looks like it used to be a MK to me. It should be fun to fix up!

welcome to a never ending prpject/hobby ;D
Here is a spot here to get your mind off things once in a while

Ack. Don't swap for an X-arcade. Just hack some X-box S controllers and hook up to the controls you already have.

You mine as well have said that in Turkish....lol
Me not so good with the wiring stuffs....lol

That's what we're here for. He already gave you the answer to the question you didn't even know you had.
Trust me, it's easy. You'll be better off listening to HarumaN.
-
Does anyone have a link they could provide?? I tried a search, but didn't seem to find what I was looking for.
Also, the control panel here is pretty beat up. Would rather invest in a new kit if I can. Some buttons are stuck, although the guy said the joysticks worked fine.

It is so easy. You don't need any prior knowledge or any sort of skills. If I can figure it out anyone can.
-
ok, it's easy, can anyone point me to the right thread here, or elsewhere?? lol :dunno

Ok. Here's a link on how to mod a controller:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64050.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64050.0)
Or a link on where to buy said modded controller ;)
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=76185.0 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=76185.0)
And there are plenty of wiring guides here...

Also... wiring guide in the Wiki

Dont get an x-arcade, keep what you got and get some new buttons and microswitches.
There is alot to learn in this hobby, and you will need (want) it one day.
i finished my first cab not long ago and im still pissing about trying to get everything to work on it. (hi-scores etc)
I recommend doing your reading before going any further, there is a wealth of knowledge on these forums.
Solid,

Agreed with everyone else above...it's one of the easier and more therapeutic building tasks (wiring)...lots of help on here including the wiki linked above.
This dialect of Turkish is surprisingly easy to learn! :lol

I will give this more thought, but I think I am going to go with the X-arcade. I'd be spending the same amount(actually more) to go my own build route.
Hope you all don't cast me out of the forums now :dunno

It's just an inferior product, that's all.

To further expand on what Ginsu said...
The encoder is fine (what sends the signals to the Xbox).
The controls (joysticks and buttons) are sub par.

True but you would be learning a lot more! ;)
The only reason so many of us are trying to persuade you is that we have gone down the same route. Right now the excitement of wanting a cab is pretty strong as is the desire for shortcuts!
-
To each their own Reptileink...
I have an X-Arcade 2 player CP and love it. Its got a lifetime warranty and is indeed very simple to plug in and get working.
That being said, if/when I were ever to build a second cabinet, I would buy and wire up my own control panel. More for esthetic and appearance purposes more than any other reason.
Either way, you're definitely off to the right start. Good Luck!

If I should give you a good advice, then it would be to relax do some reading and especially look at other peoples projects (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/board,10.0.html) to get inspiration for your own build.
And wait a little bit with that X arcade project.
The wiring bit sound very complicated, but if you read a little and ask some questions here, then I'm sure that you'll be able to fix it yourself.
Welcome btw ;)
-
Believe me folks, I came here to get just the answers I am looking for, I didn't come here to dismiss anyone's comments.
My thinking of it is this: Spend more money/time to "do it myself", or spend less and plug it in. I know I will learn more, and I know you guys won't think so, but this is the only cabinet I plan on building. We don't have a lot of play money anymore, and my one stipulation with the wife was "as cheap as possible".
I am going to be doing enough modification work on the cabinet alone to then have to sit down and wire everything. I have looked over a lot of reviews, and it's either people love it, or hate it(the x-arcade) I haven't really seen anybody give a valid reason for not liking it though ??? I buy Craftsman tools because of a lifetime warranty, why not a control panel?
I am a casual gamer, and this unit isn't even going to be in the house unless it's the basement. Most likely in my current house, this will live in the garage. My 3 kids are all under 3 years old, so they take up a HUGE amount of my "free" time. Not to mention owning a 2 family house, a garden, custom action figure hobby, friends, etc. I might only have 1-2 hours a week to even work on this thing. If I am unable to get Mame running on the Xbox, then I will only be using the controls for simple games(nes, genesis, snes, etc) more than enough for my tastes.
I am by no means going to rush into anything. My goal to have it at least running is July, although aesthetics should come first I think.
So I will continue to ask my lame questions, and get as much knowledge as possible, and I respect everyone's opinion as I hope you respect any decision I make as to what controls I choose.
-
I know you guys won't think so, but this is the only cabinet I plan on building.
:lol
Just wait.
-
Alright you guys, you have changed my mind.
I am going to buy two adapters from HarumaN and make my own control board(or refirb this one)
I have to buy a full sheet of MDF to do the small repairs on the cabinet, so I figured with the leftover wood, I would just bite the bullet...
Can I come back in the clubhouse now?? :notworthy:
-
You might be able to get smaller sheets than 4x8. Most box stores sell 1/2 or even 1/4 sheets if that works for what you need to do.

Yeah, but with one sheet I can hopefully knock out the repairs AND control board, so whatever. It's only about $26, but thanks for the info!

Ok, I don't even have this yet, but I have a question: Do we lose the ability to have an analog control???

Yes.
The triggers can be hacked, but in doing so, they become digital.
The analog sticks can't be hacked.
If you are running MAME and other EMU's, you shouldn't need analog.

Yea, that's true. I do have some xbox games burned onto it, but I guess I could just always run a control through the coin door if I wanted to play them....HOWEVER, to get back to the main menu for Evox, it was mapped to the analog stick. When you press down on it, it sends you back to the dashboard. I am going to lose that feature :(
Also, I think one of my controllers is a MadCatz, can I send you both, or do they need to both be Xbox?
-

Ah, I can hack the CLICK switch (the one when you press down the analog stick), that's not a problem. You just lose the up / down / left / right of the analog stick.
The controllers need to be be Xbox S type controllers.

that sucks(about the controls) and sorry, what are S type?? Again, sorry, was a Playstation Fanboy, never owned XBOX.
I would just have to add an extra pushbutton for the "click", correct? Maybe you could hack it to the select button?
-
Having a hard time finding a picture (at work, all is blocked, lol) but it's just a Microsoft made controller, I think the label sticker on the back has an S on it, I'll double check when I get home.
