Title: PS3-Anyone use it for mame etc?
Post by: Demon-Seed on April 12, 2010, 07:54:37 am
Hello
I am debating whether or not to load linux yellow dog onto my ps3 in order to play emulators such as mame and nes.  I have min experience with linux but I have seen many tutorials.  Has anyone tried it? what games will run full or near full speed?  I would be interested in say mk3, mk2, wrestlefest, streetfighter era.......

Does anyone know if there is a front end that can be loaded to make it appear seamless and load auto? just like a pc front end such as mamewah where i could use the ps3 controller instead of mouse and keyboard?

also is it easy to reset the hd to original if I do not like it?  Also is it possible to integrate a arcade stick?

I know with the new ps3 firmware 3.21 the took out other OS, BUT i have seen a fix  somewhere.  I am hoping someone with experience in ps3 could provide me a descent link where I can learn how to do this stuff.

thanks i advance
Jim

I loaded Yellow Dog on the PS3...  was not impressed.  It was slow and laggy.  It frustrated me to the point that I never got around to putting MAME on it.

Maybe there is a newer version since I tried that runs better?  It's been a couple of years since I did.

I updated my PS3 a few days ago.  Before the update it gave me a warning that after this update I would not be able to use any other os, blah blah blah.

I don't know if this was an empty threat or a real conflict in the os, but since I don't plan on doing anything with my PS3 but play PS3 games and blu ray movies I updated the os.

Well it isn't an empty threat or conflict.

They simply removed the ability to install a second OS from the firmware.

You are forced to update if you wish to continue using anything on the PS3 that requires a connection to PSN, and I imagine future games will require you use the later firmware as well.

Hello
Yea with the update it removed the OS install, however a guy on the scene GEOSHOT claims to have a way to reverse it and still play online.  I have always said that the ps3 is to play ps3 however it would be neat to play MAME etc on my big screen as I do not have an arcade anymore.

honestly the consoles are a waste of time for mame stick with a pc You can easily build a HTPC that will play 1080p movies and mame for cheap these days.

HTPC?

not sure what that means.. home theatre pc?  Reason why i liked the ps3 was i really did not want more box around my tv area.. we have a small house and the wife wants things to a minimal.

HTPCs (Home Theatre PCs) are general built using desktop cases so that they do fit in to the surrounding components on your entertainment furniture.

hey
yea I figured it out after posting :) however the big reason why i liked the ps3 was i had it already and did not have to buy more stuff...... i guess at the moment there is no fix for the 3.21 upgrade.... i do not get why they partnered with yellow dog only to take it away.

You can play Namco museum on it (from the store). Gives you 4 arcade classics (Galaga, Pacman, Xevious and (I think) Dig Dug ) The free demo allows you to play a few levels.

It looks a bit odd on a widescreen TV though especially the vertical games.

Hey
Well with 3.21 it killed the other os, so now I have to come up with another idea.  What I would like is a box (pc, xbox, laptop) that I can use wirless controls, maybe even wireless arcade stick, have full frontend so it is seamless, to play mame, snes, genesis, up to ps1, and n64.  Any suggestions? what is the costs?  when ppl say "xbox" is that xbox 1 or 360? I used to have xbox but It did not run games well....

thanks
Jim

regular 1 make xbox

xbox 360 wireless controllers can be hacked into arcade controller for use on the pc or 360 with the 360 pc gaming reciever.

you can also use the wireless racing wheel set on either console.

with the pc use a program called xpadder and you can program the wheel or controller to mimmic any keyboard or mouse function.

Hello
Sorry what are the capabilities of xbox vs. xbox360?

Also what are the chances that someone will fix the 3.21 issue with ps3?? That would save me a ton.

In regards to xbox vs. 360 what do I need done to the hardware etc.. to be eligible and approx costs?

If I do use pc what kinda power would I need?

thanks
Jim
