never played the 3d ones, but ya playing metroid freaks me out cuz i have no idea were iam.  its bad enough i wont go anywere i never been before unless someone takes me and i know they know the area.  It doesnt bother me to go around town or the towns around were i live but any further than that is a big no no for me.  My girlfriend tells me we should take trips to the beach and such which sounds nice, but i dont know my way around were she wants to go so i wont go.

That's "fear of the unknown" causing you anxiety. And it sounds like you have a serious case of it. My mention of "psychiatrist" above was a joke, but now that you've divulged the severity of it, I'd say you have a full blown real phobia that you should probably have treated otherwise important people in your life (like your GF) could get fed up with the limitations that imposes.

I bought a GPS thinking I would go places I haven't, but I still freak out about driving to places I've never been. The GPS hasn't helped much at all.

GPS's are evil.  Now, instead of learning where I am, I listen to the little voice on my dashboard.  Then, when I am lost and don't have the GPS, I'm double screwed -- since I have no effing clue where I am anymore.

Start small:

take a few side streets in your neighborhood that you've never been down before.

Getting carjacked solves the problem of driving in new places.

If I'm going somewhere I've never been before, then I generally will print out mapquest for directions, and then print out the thomas guide maps of the area so that I have detailed street maps of the surrounding areas as well.  If you have a smart phone, then you could probably forgo the thomas guide maps since everything you'll need will be on google maps.
