Hulu - High Score - Watch the full feature film now. (http://www.hulu.com/embed/EIKcdY0RpvjInTQbW9E0SA)
Haven't watched it yet. I'm going to listen to it while I work....
-
just watched it, thnx for the link. how that guy doesnt destroy the machine is amazing, doesnt even seem to get that mad about it either. he is a better man than me
-
Yeah, I loved Bill's composure. He really keeps his cool in a situation where I'd probably just cry like a little girl. :lol
-
I hate HULU.... Cause they hate Canadians

Booooo...no love for neighbours. :'(
-
Generally speaking no one has any emotional feelings towards canadians. To do so would be to admit that they matter in some way. ;)
-
What are canadians? Is that some kind of almond cookie?
-

Yup! Tasteful and low in fat. Just like the people... can't say the same for our neighbours. ;D

Yeah, tried that. It appears that the webplayer isn't play nice with the proxy redirection. :banghead:
-
Just watched it... pretty cool.
Sucks all the documentary attempts were plagued with machine issues.
Does look like he made another attempt in 2008 to get 45 million something.....still 10th place though which he already held. Kinda feel bad for the guy.
He also has a 15th place (well, soon to be 16th) on Asteroids.

Poutine and Coffee Crisp. Oh, and the Peel Pub.

I haven't been there in a while either! I always said it was the peel pub b/c I had to peel myself off the floor at the end of the evening's...festivities.
-
the end of that movie is effing hilarious
-
LOL I liked the roller skating the best
-
I thought that was pretty cool too.... quite unexpected, but I was diggin' it.

Stupid regional crapola ;)
Oh well using other *sources*

:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:
Oh my god! I saw this thread two nights ago and watched the video. I must've lost interest after the 'official' attempt and didn't watch the end. I just watched it as you guys peaked my interest. I have to say that he looks to have some serious skills in his one true passion, but, oh...my...god.
I could say sooo much more about the entire sadness of this film, but I won't.....
Holy cow, that ending dude....wow.
-
Even the Twin Galaxies judge starts coming off borderline normal by the end of it. A little too passionate but not crazy.
Have you seen Rob's art collection in Chasing Ghosts, though? :lol

That scene is as hilariously mind blowing as the end of High Score.
"And here's a picture of Christopher Lambert." :laugh2:
-
I have been trying to rent, buy, borrow, or steal Chasing Ghosts for years and have never encountered it.
No, I have not googled it and bought it from whoever made it. :P
I've tried to as well but cannot find it. Is it even available for sale? I believe Netflix has it but we don't subscribe.

It is on Netflix, and also occasionally on one of the pay channels -Starz, I think.
The version that people about with the art collection is an early print. Thats not the version they show on Starz, and most likely not the version that is on DVD.
In all honesty, Chasing Ghosts bummed me out.
King of Kong and High Score were both great. Bill Carlton has a dry sense of humor that cracks me up. I got a few really good laughs out of High Score. Cracked me up when he was watching his Missile Command playback and started yelling at himself when he laid down on the control panel.
He has an awareness to how goofy the whole thing is that is lacking in many of these guys. That lack of awareness was what made the people in Chasing Ghosts seem pathetic.
EDIT: It is not on Netflix! It comes up in their listings, but when you add it to your que, it comes up in the area with DVD's that aren't released yet, meaning they don't stock it.

That's good to know. My mother reserved it for me one time under her Netflix account and then I never heard anything about it from her again.

I think I'm the only one who hasn't seen King Of Kong. :-[
I did see Chasing Ghosts recently (someone mentioned it when discussing Berzerk). I completely agree that it bummed me out and I agree that the 'art' collection was too funny. For those who are looking for it, have you tried torrents?
It bummed me out so much, that I deleted it from my portable player so that I wouldn't be tempted to watch it again.
I was hoping for a fun, upbeat recollection of the arcades that I'd like to share with my kids. Sadly, it's not even close. What about the end of Chasing Ghosts....sending the mail to the Smithsonian (or something like that?) That was kinda sad....right?
I'd love to see an arcade retrospective/documentary that showcases lots of games. Not just focused on one or two.
It would also be kinda cool if these documentaries had working machines. I wanted to see the 2 guys go head to head in Berzerk....but they couldn't get the game to work! And with High Score, why would you attempt a world record on a machine that keeps crashing??
-
I think I'm the only one who hasn't seen King Of Kong. :-[
Netflix has this in their "Watch It Now" section right now, meaning you can stream it if you have broadband.
-
I got the feeling that the filmmakers lived down the street from the Berzerk guy - who the hell cares about THAT game?
I do!! I love Berzerk. But, for the movie to spend that much time with two previous Berzerk Champions and then not show them playing.....that's absolutely absurd.

I have broadband! :D But I don't have Netflix :'(
Perhaps I'll check Hulu....
-
Finally watched it.....no thanks to HULU
Not a bad little documentary, felt pretty bad for the guy though.
When does the roller skating sequel come out? ::)
-
I just watched King of Kong.
Am I the only one that thinks Billy Mitchell is douchey?
And then the whole Twin Galaxies 'frat' treating Wiebe as an outsider? WTF? They should've welcomed him with open arms.
Based on what I've seen in King Of Kong and Chasing Ghosts, that's a group of people that I could do without.
-
That movie has a story that was made in the editing room. Don't trust everything you see in King of Kong.

You know what, I've read the threads about quotes and events being out of sequence and all, and I know about him helping Doris the Q*Bert lady (RIP), but that fact remains that the dude comes off like an a-hole.
There are 3 minute sections of uncut tape in King Of Kong of him acting like an ass. All I can say is that if thats how the KoK producers wanted to portray him, he sure made their job easy.
He came off like an a-hole in an MTV special on him too, which was before King of Kong.

What I said had nothing to do with his character. I was pointing out to the other poster that there is a lot of fabricated ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- in that movie.
-
How can you not be addressing his character? The fact that it portrays Billy in a bad light is the main point of contention with the movie, the dividing line between people who like it and hate it.
If you just want to point out fabricated ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- in movies while avoiding core issues, theres is more in Lord Of The Rings and Spiderman.
-
I'm mostly talking about things like:
Billy Mitchell being the champion at the beginning of the film. He wasn't. Tim Sczerby was.
Billy wouldn't play head-to-head? Steve and Billy played head-to-head in 2004 (and it proved nothing).
Billy's taped submission wasn't a submission at all, but a bounty (beat the score, win $10k). Walter Day took it upon himself to enter the score, but Robert Mruczek took it down 48 hours later because it didn't meet the criteria for a submission.
Steve's taped submissions were on an illegal (by Twin Galaxies standards) Double Donkey Kong board set, which is why they took issue with them (even though for a long time his DK Jr score was kept on TG despite coming from the same board set).
Some scenes with Billy on the phone jump back and forth through different conversations that have been spliced together. The easiest way to tell is by watching the type of phone he's using change from shot to shot.
This one is about his character: The movie depicts Billy as leaving the restaurant when Steve shows up, though in reality Billy ate with everyone and they took pictures together. (I don't have the link on me)
The guy just puts on an arrogant act. Everyone I've talked to that has met him has said he was super nice to them. He even signed some stuff for the guys that lost the home / arcade here in the fire.
-
I don'[t doubt anything you've listed Ginsu, but when you say that Billy ate with everyone, did that include Wiebe? The movie showed Wiebe and another guy sitting in a booth. I believe it was either shown or implied that the others were sharing the large table at the same time.
The movie also showed Sanders talking to Billy on the phone when Wiebe walked in 'uninvited'(?)
I understand editing, but, he always looked a little wangy. I previously saw the QBert thing and thought that was fantastic of him. When I watched the movie and saw him ask her to bring the 'bounty tape', that act of kindness felt a little more contrived.
So, did Billy ever talk to Wiebe during any of these events, etc.? The film made it look like he avoided him the entire time.

Good link... I'm a documentary junkie and KoK is one of my favorites. I didn't realise Twin Galaxies had a forum...very informative thanks Ginsu

No need for a video...the title would get your point across.
From what I saw, and I know that it's not cut and dry, but Steve Sanders was tight with Billy. Sanders was the one contacting Billy from the restaurant, Sanders was was feeding Wiebe's scores over the phone. When Sanders was on the phone with Billy from the restaurant Sanders said that Steve and Mark "unexpectedly, and apparantly...I don't know how it happened..just this moment, Mark Alpiger and Steve Wiebe just walked in the door. They did not come with us. They just now came in by themselves." Sanders then removed his mic and went out back to wait for Billy. There's no reason he couldn't wait inside with everyone else. Then, outside he replies to the cameraman (presumably) saying that Mark & Steve showed up unexpectedly and uninvitedly - hard to keep them away - and Bill just doesn't want anything to do with ('it' or 'him').
From the relationship that Billy and Sanders seem to have, I have no reason to believe that Wiebe was not invited and not welcomed. I read that Mark Alpiger knew that everyone was going to the restaurant, but that doesn't mean that anyone mentioned it to Wiebe.
I know I'm late to the King Of Kong debate, and I really don't care one way or the other. To me, Billy looks like a wang.

To me, Billy looks like a wang.
Read the bottle closer. It's "Ricky's Famous Wang Sauce"
-
Ugh, not this ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- again.
It's new to me....
I'll have to see it soon.
-
No need for a video...the title would get your point across.
But then you wouldn't have enjoyed a little Chuck D and Flava-flav in your day! :lol

I surely appreciate you're attempt to liven up my day ;D , but I always thought these guys had nothing on NWA!

Apples and Oranges, man.

Yeah, I don't think there were any homosexuals in Public Enemy.
Who is/was gay in N.W.A? Are you implying Eazy-E because of his death from AIDS? The dude had 7 kids with 6 different women and 4 pending paternity lawsuits from 4 other different women when he died. He obviously never had protected sex and screwed tons of different women.
Anyway.....
Thanks for posting this link! I have been trying to find a way to watch this movie for a while Be careful what you wish for....
What a boring pile of crap. Lesson to all documentary filmmakers, not all subjects will make a good documentary. Besides the fact that the dude is a major --cream-filled twinkie--, nothing compelling happens at all.

The full spelling of Dbag is an editable offense?
wow.

Same for Guns n' Roses. ;)
and...hahaha, awesome pic Ginsu! :D
-
Mitchell or Sanders don't even register on the douchebaggery radar when you involve Brian Kuh. No amount of film editing could erase the huge "toolbox" stamp across his forehead.
-
Sanders is a good guy.
-
Sanders is a good guy.
I know, but I also know he received his share of flack, too. :)
-
Only for lying about his score when he was a kid.
-
Yeah, he's one of those types of Christians (not getting into....not the board for it...)
