Title: Stand Alone Controller Art - The Great Wave
Post by: heavytanhat on April 05, 2010, 09:20:04 pm
For your consideration, my design for a standalone controller.  I can't really call it my artwork, since I'm not a 19th century Japanese man, but the rest is mine.

I have a fully fuctional cardboard prototype, and am ready to start cutting wood as soon as I have the art finalized and printed.  Haven't quite decided on the colors:

The last one obviously doesn't work with the Great Wave art, I bought those buttons when I was thinking I'd do something based on the rayed sun battle flag of Japan.  This potentially final art at the top also has a larger ring around the joystick as I can't make up my mind about a dust washer either.  Please let me know what you think, about my design, if you think it's a terrible idea to 'borrow' a piece of art for my controller, or whatever else you have to say about it.

The white buttons/joystick work the best.

I would opt for a white washer to mesh better with the theme.

@SavannahLion: I've currently got the clear buttons and bubble top in the prototype, but with a white start button as opposed to the back start button pictured.  I really like the feel of the clear buttons and love the look of the bubble top, so I'll probably stick with those and go with white t-molding as well.  I like the idea of a white dust washer, any idea where I can get one for a U360 / JLW?

@HarumaN: With that art, or in general?  I like the color combo but I can't see it with The Great Wave.  Here's a render I did early in brainstorming, not too bad, but too 1 dimensional

Those buttons with the art...  it adds warmth...  and ties in to the clouds (which are warmer colors than the rest).

I dunno.  I just like it.   ;D

I make and sell whites amongst other colours.

Funny coincidence. I was just in Seattle this weekend and went to the Seattle Asian Art Museum where they have a Japanese wood block print exhibit of Hokusai’s Great Wave , as well as other works he did from his Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji series.
Really awesome exhibition, if you're in the area, check it out!

As for the buttons:

Avoid black. It draws your eye away from the magnificent artwork instantly.
I'd go for the clear play-buttons, while inserting the artwork into the button plungers so you can have that continuous look of the artwork carry though. Does the Player Start button have to be on the top of the CP? Couldn't you mount it on the side like how the TE sticks are?

@Franco B:  Hmm...  Do you make thinner ones, more in line with the stock dust washers from U360s?  How about clear?

@opt2not:  It doesn't *have* to be on top, but the start button is also my shift button for the U360, so it's nice to be able to hit it and another button without taking my hand off the stick.

I kind of think the white goes better with the Asian theme of the art. It points towards subtlety and calm.

The red/orange/yellow/white struck me as being more appropriate for a Hawaiian theme. :)
