Title: Mame lagging on some games after HDD format
Post by: F_Zero45 on April 02, 2010, 05:27:50 pm
OK for some reason or another Mame game sounds are repeating on some games, IE MK, MK2, NBA Jam mostly midway games but Donkey Kong kinda sounds funny when Mario walks, and seems to lag a little. These games used to run smooth before I upgraded. What I was using before was:

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.10GHz
512 MB of RAM
ArcadeVGA v2 128MB
800x600 res 32 bit color
XP Home SP1

My Current Specs :
Intel Celeron 2.73 GHz
1.5 GB of RAM
ArcadeVGA v2 128MB
800x600 res 32 bit color
XP Home SP1

I don' understand why its lagging with a some what faster PC. :dunno and an HDD format / reinstall OS

Please help. Also I'm running mame32 0.118u1

Well it's actually not faster, or it could be faster........ it's different.  Also you've only posted the processor speed, not the buss speed, cache size ect.  Raw ghz mean less than the potentional bottlenecks on your system when the specs are that close.

You switched from an AMD processor to a Intel processor.  They are totally different animals.

Things you should check:

Make sure your mame settings are the same.... they make a difference!
If they are the same try changing them, again they make a difference.

Make sure you aren't running a build of mame optimized of amd processors, you are running intel now.

Defrag your harddrive.....  I dunno how it could be fragged after a format, but if you did one of those cheapo "quick formats" I guess it's possible.

How would I find out if this version is Optimized for intel or AMD?

Where you downloaded it from.
Binaries from mame.net are always intel optimized, which is what you want.

Where can one get a build of mame optimized for amd processors?

I didn't know there were separate versions of mame for the different processors.

Thanks.

That's a good question to be honest.  Generally speaking you have to compile your own version with different compile flags switched on.  There used to be a few sites that posted the different builds, but I think they are all gone now.  emufrance might still do it.
