Title: Finding a version of Ms. pacman?
Post by: shateredsoul on April 02, 2010, 02:41:51 am
My friend swears that the version of Ms. Pacman he played at the doughnut was faster than the mame version (and another version we found at a bar). Is there a faster version of Ms. Pacman? One that starts off faster from the first level?

The rom is a clone of Ms. Pac-Man and is a speed up hack.  The rom name is called mspacmnf.

sounds like a speed hacked ms pacman, not too terribly uncommon if i recall correctly.

[edit:] Dazz beat me to it by seconds

and this was available in arcades? Because I also remember seeing it at the donut shop.. and I played it too, just can't remember an actual game since that was so long ago.

Yes, it was a rom hack that arcades could have added to the Ms. Pac motherboard.  I believe that some may have also had a dip switch setting that allowed fast play as well, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Correct....  There was also a hardware hack where it would run at normal speed, and then if you presses a "turbo" button that was added to the machine, MS. Pac-Man (or Pac-man for that matter) would run at the fast speed while the ghosts ran at normal speed.   The always on fast version is in standard, every day Mame.  The button version is in Misfit Mame.

i think by the late 80s there were probably more speeded up ms pacs than normal.  theres one at a laundromat and one at a local supper club here i play on a regular basis.  they also sped up regular pacs, we still have one of those at our local mall arcade that i visit about once a month.  fast speed mc pac is my favorite arcade game.
