Title: Centipede Cab going haywire need advice.
Post by: dethfactor on March 30, 2010, 06:33:38 pm
Picked up this centipede cab on Craigslist a few weeks ago locall for $100. Things in great shape but was missing the sound board. Replaced that and it worked for a few weeks but now the video is on the fritz. It still plays and has sound but the video is garbled. Trying to find out if its the board or the monitor. I have an extra main board that I'm going to test later tonight but I wanted to know if anyone has seen this problem before.

Thanks.(http://www.gloriousmistake.com/images/pede_vid.jpg)

Centipede doesn't have a sound board.  Do you mean the main board?

It looks like the video is out of sync.  Try adjusting it.  If it won't adjust out, your monitor probably needs recapping, especially if they're original.

My mistake it was a power supply board. It was missing that. I ended up buying a pair mobo+ps board on ebay. I don't think the monitor is original, given that there's heavy burn in from donkey kong on it. So should I replace the monitor? I've been looking at the 13" Betson CGA monitors for $189. Does anyone know a better deal?

If there's DK burn that means it's probably a Sanyo, as a guess.

I don't think you should REPLACE it, I think you should fix it.  New capacitors should make that work great again.

You'll need a 19" monitor in that cab.

That "haywire" is just the horizontal sync not working. I had that problem on mine and all it needed was to reflow the solder around the video connector pins.

From the picture, it would appear to be the full sized cabinet and not a mini.  I think the 13" monitor comment is throwing you off, but even the cabaret used a full sized 19" monitor.

He means the AR-2 board I bet. So, that's sound & power :D

Yes, looks like a simple horizontal sync problem, try adjusting the pots first....

I monkeyed around with the pots on the monitor and the picture blanked out. There's also a focus sag in the center of the screen and there's so much burn in from both centipede and DK on it I've been looking for an excuse to replace it.
As for the board it was missing, it was the sound/power board. I've seen it labeled either on ebay.

I'm thinking about buying this one? Might do it tomorrow.

I got a friend who works in the area can pick it up and bring it out this weekend. So I don't have to eat shipping costs.

If you're going to replace the monitor, fine...but sell the old one to someone on the board.  They don't make them any more, and supplies are dwindling.

So I put in an order with Betson on the  19" Torvis monitor above. Apparently they've been discontinued. The parts person, which I can safely assume that English is not their native language stated that, "I  few 27 in digital monitor but I do sell replacement lcd kit for 425.00"

So Betson is out of CRT's. Any suggestions?

I'd like to fix it but I don't have the patience at the moment nor the room for it living in a small apartment. I do plan on selling it (the monitor) or keeping it after the replacement comes in. I do realize the rarity of it but seeing as this is my 3rd cab and the only one I live with I want it playable ASAP which it was for a week. I ended up ordering a new monitor as well as new CPO and a bunch of other stuff for it on arcadeshop.com. Thanks for the help. Anyone know where I can get replacement coin return slots? The ones on the cab have holes drilled through them. Just asking if anyone knows off the top of their head. I found a few sites with the parts but I couldn't be certain. Figured maybe someone would be able to identify the coin box and know where to find replacements.

Including two pics. The front and back of the box. Don't have the tools and it's to late to start tearing it apart.

Doesn't arcadeshop have them anymore either ?

Maybe these guys:

http://www.pentusa.com/ (http://www.pentusa.com/)

or

http://www.8liners.com/special.htm (http://www.8liners.com/special.htm) (189 brand new, 110 dollar for refurbished 19" monitors)

or have the one you have now repaired by www.arcadecup.com (http://www.arcadecup.com)

Are we 100% sure this is a monitor issue?  Is the game playing blind?

The game does play blind and I swapped the main boards out just to make sure and had the same problem.

There's an image on the monitor on the snapshot above.  Looks like typical cap failure.  Another video source is the only way to be sure.

Same here...

I had the screen go blank as well, just adjust it back and reset the power. I think my cocktail actually say "Horiz Freq" on the pot I adjusted if that helps.
