Title: Where can I buy a 19" VGA Arcade Monitor?
Post by: leapinlew on March 30, 2010, 12:50:16 am
Does anyone sell them anymore? The last one I had was a great deal from Wells Gardner. $99 for a U3100. I don't see 19" monitors at WG anymore. Is anyone making them?

Don't you mean CGA?
VGA is just on every second hand market site.

No, I mean VGA. A full 19" viewable monitor.

19" PC monitors (which will do VGA and usually quite a bit higher) are readily available free or nearly free from junk piles at this point.  If you tear the plastic casing off, you can mount the tube and boardset onto a frame of your liking (and possibly construction).

The dot pitch will be tighter than most arcade monitors resulting in crisper graphics (which is often undesirable at low resolutions like CGA or EGA), but if you intend to use this at VGA, that's not a bad thing.

I appreciate the info. The thing is a 19" Arcade monitor is 19" viewable. A 19" computer monitor is 18" viewable. The cabinet I'm using, I need it exactly 19".

Javery  - I looked on the page and all I saw were CGA monitors. Did I miss something?

Other than LCD, that's all I saw (and obviously LCD isn't an option!)

Here is my jukebox:

You can see from the photo that the monitor needs to be exactly the same size. The bezel clams down around it.

Depends on the monitor, what country you're in, etc.  In some countries, all displays are marketed by viewable area.  You could get 19"s in those, but they were marketed as a "20 inch" in other countries where the bezel size was included in the size of the display.

The US of course switched somewhere in the middle, so you can't go by the labels unless you also know the date.  Just measure it.  They're out there, and usually free/cheap.

Oh, and arcade monitor measurements have the same problem.  Size varies by region and how they measure.  Example: A 29" Japanese monitor is a 27" US size monitor.

D'oh!  Didn't see the LCD in front of the descriptions... when did those become the standard?  I can't believe these things are already hard to find.

Thats where your wrong Monmotha. I have measured and I'm looking around now. They aren't free/cheap or easy to find.

I can find 19" CRT computer monitors all day long. I'm having a difficult time finding a 19" Arcade monitor that accepts a VGA signal.

Yeah, it's dang near impossible to find a 19" ARCADE CRT that supports VGA these days. I've been looking too.

What about this one:

http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/49083000.htm (http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/49083000.htm)

If you look down at Resolution section, it goes up to 1024x768.

Edit: Noticed you can't buy it from that page, so I'm wondering myself because I was going to buy this one.

Well, they must have all been trashed, then.  A couple years ago, people couldn't give the darned things away.  I remember seeing postings for free 19 and 20" CRTs all over the place.  The 20s were the rarer beast, though a lot of things advertised as 19" seemed to actually be close to that viewable.  The real determining factor is the tube type (Mnnxxxxx where nn is a measurement in cm), but that's hard to determine without tearing the back off.  The bezels often hide a fair bit of imageable area, though, so you may be looking at something that seems wrong but is actually the right size.

Any reason you HAVE to have the extra inch?  Some sort of fixed mounting system that you can't replace?  Most cabinets can be reasonably modified to take anything close.  I've got a 29/27 crammed into my MK2 which was designed for a 25.

As for that WG on Happ's website, they aren't claiming that they have that monitor, just the accessories.  I've heard from several sources that the only CRT based monitor WG still is making in any capacity is their D9xxx (whichever one is current), and those will be 29/27".

Really, 19" arcade monitors that did VGA were somewhat rare beasts to begin with.  Most games that ran/run VGA were in larger dedicated type cabinets with bigger monitors.  Some slot/gambling games used them briefly, but they all went LCD pretty quickly.

I few posts up I posted my jukebox:

The cabinet is based around that monitor and a touchscreen overlay conforms to the curve of a 19" arcade monitor. I'll keep looking - something is bound to turn up. Thanks for responding.

Ah, that's a TOUCHSCREEN overlay.  I thought it was just a hunk of plastic that conformed, in which case a 1/2" around each side (actually a little less) would probably be bridgeable with some foam or similar.

That looks to be the billabs monitor.  You could try billabs first to see if its any cheaper direct.

Yeah, I just didn't see a link on the billabs page showing how to buy it, so I searched the model and found that link.

Ah, OK.  If I remember correctly you have to call billabs to order.
