We have a Mitsubishi HD DLP projector in our family room, set up with a 102" screen, which is where i watch movies and play games. My wife however likes to watch stupid crap on TV, so she spends her time in the living room, where we have a panasonic 32" CRT standard def tv, with svideo. my wife and I have been talking about replacing the TV in our living room for a while now, however we don't exactly have a bunch of money lying around. while looking around at TVs at local stores, i was not very happy with the picture quality on alot of the sets..with the exception of a few expensive Sony and Samsung units. i was pretty sure i was going to have to spend around $1300 to get one that looked good. then one night at walmart, i decided to look at their selection...that is when i found the Vizio SV420M. it is a 42" LCD, 120hz 1080p television. I was very impressed with the picture quality on this unit at the store.. best of all, it was $749, After talking to my wife, we decided it was worth a try. we picked this up last night and I am nothing but impressed with this unit. there are plenty of inputs
4 HDMI
2 Component
1 Svideo
1 Composite Video
1 VGA
i have a directv HD DVR connected via HDMI, a Samsung HD841 upconverting DVD player (component video) and a modded xbox (component video).
i am very impressed with this unit. the remote is kinda crappy, but that is the biggest complaint i have about the unit. another cool feature is that it lets you name your inputs, which is handy for my wife.
i need to get a wall mount for it yet..but i wont want to spend $200 for one at a store..so i'll be hitting up monoprice.com, since they are awesome.
walmart also has a 47" model in the same series, but it didn't look anywhere near as good..the 42" is definitely the right way to go.
bottom line, if you are looking for an affordable TV that looks great, you can't go wrong with the Vizio SV420M.

I have a 32" Vizio 1080p LCD and I love it. Before it, I had a Vizio 32" Plasma and that thing sucked. The image retention was a nightmare on it. I took it back and got the LCD and it has been great. Same inputs as yours, minus one HDMI.

I know the exact 42" model you speak of.
we have been watching that exact one for a few month's now and we almost grabbed it a few months ago when they had a sale on it for $699.99.
the samsung sharp GE and what not were a few hundred more for the same size and there display's looked like garbage compared to that 42" vizio plus you could see good from the side of the screen where most of the other blurred out.
I think were best off waiting now though becuase now they have these 3D tv's coming out and now sharp has their quadtech or something like that out where they now took the coloring to a new level.
RGB is now a thing of the past as they are stating to produce RGBY with the included yellow so there is now 4rth color tech out there and more are going to be released by other's then just sharp and when they do all the plain jain HD 1080's will be out of date again and old news but that is actually good new's for the average income person becuase all the price's will drop alot upon more release's of the newer tech.

Without actually researching this (aka, I could be wrong), I think the 47" is probably just as good as the 42". They probably are identical in terms of image processing hardware, and so on. One's just bigger than the other. More likely one of them needed to be configured with proper contrast, etc. I mean, the pixels are going to be bigger on the 47" screen, which theoretically could make things look less sharp. But 47" isn't that big, and it's not that much bigger than 42", so I doubt this would be a problem.
