Ok, so it isn't done yet and there are a few things that don't match the Tardis exactly, but still :D

How are you going, making the inside bigger than the outside  ;D

The next place I move to I hope to remove the back panel and put it up against the door to my bedroom! That way you walk into the tardis, and there is a whole bedroom inside! :D

Other than that, I needed a phone booth for the VOIP phone...

Actually, that is a great idea (",) . I've often thought that if i built a TARDIS, i would do just that. Maybe not my bedroom, maybe a game room. You HAVE to have the center console, and where are you going to put your bed?  ;D

---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, I'm gonna do it when i finally have my own place! The center console can house some screens and my console collection. Thanks for the inspiration, Katie (",)

Oh, and top work so far by the way...

Mine, or Katies?

Mine will not be arcade related. To be honest, mixing a "tardis" and a cab seems like a good waste of both... Still looked cool tho...

IE, My Tardis will be an actual phone booth. Not very creative in that respect, but when people go in and see a phone, it would make sense. :D

Actually the Tardis isn't a phone booth, it's a english police box.  Their primary function was as a temporary holding cell for criminals (usually the intoxicated) until the paddy wagon would arrive.  They DID have a phone inside that the public could use toll-free to call for help though.  It made it doubly convenient for the drunkards that normally got locked in them as the police could allow them to call someone to come pick them up.

Bill and Ted paid tribute by making their time machine an actual phone booth, which is of course, very similar looking.

Ok, nerd history lesson over.  I just couldn't stand to hear someone call it a phone booth.

I did my research on the London police boxes, and yes you are right. (although I hadn't heard of them being used for containment). I even recreated the signs on the side and there is more work to be done with it.

Regardless, the thing is held together with hinges, and can be taken apart for moving and modding :D

Edit: Also, the colour is off. I had to go with Postal Blue (US) as it was the darkest blue I could get :<

But.... who uses phone booths anymore. You're not gonna want to sit in a box to talk to people.

I thought the same thing when I read his post, but decided to research it before making the comment and found out the phone was accessible from both inside and outside.

It's not retarded, it's incredibly clever.  Another popular use of a police box was a "guard shack" of sorts for posted policemen.  So the bobbys could potentially have personal effects in them.  (Typically some first aid gear, a stool a space heater ect...)  Because of the smart design they could lock up the box when they go on patrol and yet still give the public access to the phone.

What's clever about letting a drunk, angry man have access to a phone? Isn't he just going to trash it?

protokatie, you should have posters printed out and cover the interior walls from top to bottom + ceiling such that when viewed from the door, it looks like the big inside room.

That would require some amazing lighting... But a good idea. The printer I have can do edgeless printing and I have printed plenty of posters... Hmmm...

For now it is going to be an indoor phonebooth (There are three of us living here, and not having to hear the loudmouth roomie is a bonus). Other future options for the thing are as an IT rack and of course removing the back panel and setting in front of an entrance to a room so that the thing will literally BE bigger on the inside :D

EDIT: The build itself is now complete. I need to print out some stuff for the outside to "complete the look". Once it is installed I should be able to get some pics. :D

Huh???  He only has access if they allow him to, even if he's locked in.  You'd really have to see one in action man but that's impossible because the larger, multi-purpose ones no longer exist.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to build one myself one day. That and an astro-mech. My Tardis will front into another room, maybe the arcade...

Damn, I really need to do this one day, but it won't fit into my house right now ...

the good thing about them is although they look very roomy inside theyre actually very small on the outside so theyll fit most anywhere

here's mine anyway, its fully functional, just popping to the shops in it in the pic  ;)

Sorry about the poor image quality. I dont have a real digital camera, just the webcam on my netbook.

The last image was an attempt at what it looks like inside... There is a lightning lamp that is just glowing white in the pic, and an lcd monitor for the computer hidden inside. Also a chair. The thing is really cozy when in actual use. BTW the top crown of my tardis is hollow, and will eventual be the place I hide my fileserver.

EDIT: I just realized that the top crown isnt really visible in any of the photos (just barely in the first pic).

Kind of silly... But I recall someone mentioning making this box so it was like a whole room inside (like the show?).
Im not a big dr. who fan but remember seeing it some as a kid.
Anyways, I thought thatd be a cool idea to try to figure out how to pull it off.
nothing fantastic here I know... just playing around. But putting it in a corner (or even a fake facade onto a corner), cutting in a bulkhead of sorts into the room to give it a little extra illusion and walah!

As Ray pointed out, I had already thought of such a thing :D . One thing to consider tho (after looking at your plan) is that the impact would be much greater if three sides of the tardis were "open" (ie could be seen). If I take off the back panel and simply put it up against an opening to a room, it would look like it had been placed up against a wall. The "in corner" sketch you made might make it look too much like it was built in. Regardless, this thing is held together with hinges so I can remove any panel :D.
Title: Re: The Time Lords are coming!
Post by: RobbyMac on April 23, 2010, 01:09:53 am
Ah I missed the mention of hinged panel attached to a wall!

Yeah, my initial thought was to have 2 walls on the tardis, so when you walked in, you would be in a large room immediately. Then I figured it'd be more practical to cut in a bulkhead rather than cut out the entire corner.

I think it's pretty cool regardless of how it's done, and I was just tinkering. The biggest impact on me from that show was the fact that a small box contained such a large room.

Post by: protokatie on April 23, 2010, 01:14:06 am
Good point. I see where you are going with that line of logic. In my idea you have to "walk through" the tardis to get to the larger room, with yours, it is instantly a larger room once you open the doors.

The way the tardis I have is put together, both ways are possible. Regardless, it is currently the phone booth/info center "room" in the livingroom. The hinges were initially a part of the design concept so it could be moved easily, but lighting struck when I realized it would allow for more tardis like behaviour... :D
