Title: where can I find a 7 inch lcd? doesn't need to be touch screen
Post by: shateredsoul on March 26, 2010, 02:16:44 am
I found several lcd screens for cars, but I want one for my cab.  I was thinking about something in the range of 7".  I would probably go for non-touchscreens since they are substantially cheaper... but they're all made for cars.  Has anyone spotted any lcds out there?

this one has an audio video jack.. would that work? Is there anyway to convert a vga signal to a simple vga video signal? (yellow cable)

I assume you mean RCA.  If so, most video cards support TV out these days.  Most TV out is in the form of RCA and/or SVideo.  If it's SVideo only, you can get a simple passive adapter for ~$1 that will make things work for you.

In my cabinet I have the DoubleSight 7" LCD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824185013&cm_re=double_sight-_-24-185-013-_-Product) which is a USB monitor.

The Intec Wii Screen is a relatively cheap LCD display that I've tried to use for other purposes.

A few thoughts on it. It does not come with inputs, but it is fairly easy to add them; I've done it. It only accepts composite unfortunately. I think it can be modded for s-video, but I have no idea how to do it. The picture is pretty good quality, not great, but pretty good. It is 16:9 and has built-in speakers. It require 12V, exactly 12V and only 12V. You should be able to just connect it to the power supply of your PC if that's what you are using. And what's wrong with an LCD for cars? Most are just plain old LCD displays, just advertised as 'car monitors'.

It refused to work for my portable N64, but it should work in a fixed application with a stable power supply.

My cab is still under-construction, but this is how it is so far.

I'm planning on using Marquee Magician and CPWizard to display on the second monitor.  We are also looking into having HyperSpin interface with a second screen much like HyperPin does.

XCVG: I have no issue using a car lcd, I just want one that already has the input that I need.  So that I don't have to hack it.  So the link you posted, does that screen come with an ac adapter that can be used?

Dazz: Yup, I got the idea from seeing your cab.  I had all sorts of crazy ideas on how to use it... showing flyers, control configs, tips, moves.. during gameplay, but the hard part is to actually figure out how that is possible across systems.  I thought maybe just having general pngs that showed people how the buttons had been mapped from the original controllers to the cab. It would be great to have individual ones on mame, but I can't figure cp wizard out.  I think I just need to set aside sometime to figure things out.

I've actually been thinking about that myself.  I'm considering picking up one of these small LCD's to play around with,  if it's not too daunting,  I might even go ahead and write a program that'd load certain things and push them to the little monitor if there isn't anything out there that does it already.  My interests trending towards instruction cards and moves.  Marquee's would be killer if only there was a LCD that had reasonably similiar dimensions to original marquees.

Looking things over,  all I'd have to do is grab the files Mr. Do has labeled as instructions in the artwork .zips and just put them up on the second screen.  I think it's viable.

Gatt,

So you might want to look for a program called "marquee magician" it does something similar to what you're talking about. The only thing that's unfortunate is that it has only been programed to work with the gameexer frontend and I think someone is working on it for hyperspin.  It would be great if it could be made to work independently of any frontend so it can be used on all frontends.

00085.MTS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is_CAWJfiFo#ws) I think it's smart how he has a 2nd screen under the plexi of his CP display the game cards.

I personally couldn't figure out this program yet, if something similar could be made that would be great! If you ever decide to make a program like this please let me know.. I don't have any programing knowledge, but I'd like to help in any way possible.

+1 on the 7" DoubleSight. I got one for work from NewEgg and it is a sharp little monitor. $125 w/ shipping.

Best part about this one is that you don't need a separate video card. It gets power and the video signal over a USB cable. Only negative is that the USB cable comes directly out of the back. The monitor is extremely thin, but it has to have about 1" clearance in the back for the USB cable to bend. Probably not an issue for your needs.

As for mounting, it takes a single machine screw in the center of the back. if you don't need flush mounting, you could drill a small hole in the wood, get a long screw and just connect it right to the wood. Drill a hole for the wire also.

On a side note, anyone know of a good 7-10" touch screen monitor? Preferably a SAW touch system, but any will work.
