Title: MCR Replacement Switcher - NO TILT!?!
Post by: spyhunter on March 19, 2010, 05:07:47 pm
Hello, could somebody with knowledge of MCR arcade sets please tell me why my tilt function no longer works with my recently replaced MCR power adapter switcher.  The game makes the tilting noise, but never resets the system, just keeps making the noise, or after exiting setup mode, also doesn't reset.  The game operates normally other than this.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with me not using the big metal hunk in the bottom of the machine, because mine fried when I took my Spy Hunter to the UK with me and it didn't like the 50Hz power over here.  Anyway, as far as I can tell the metal hunk provides an unregulated 12VAC (converted to DC by the new board) source to the sound amplifiers, but that's it.  I can't tell from the schematics if it goes anywhere else, but I have tried the 12VDC output from the switcher into the new board where the hunk would plug into, but maybe it's not enough juice.  I hope that I can resolve this without having to repair or purchase another metal hunk, because my new monitor does not even require the isolation transformer that the hunk also provides.

Reseting a game has nothing to do with power supplies.

Do you REALLY need tilt? Is this thing operating in a public place where people are kicking the coin door?

Something tells me that Ray ain't got no MCR games.  ;D

They are, reportedly (I only have one), a total nightmare and somewhat variable with respect to conversion to switchers and will always work better with original linear supplies, as the OP was told last year when he asked the same question on KLOV.

I dunno why he is having the problem that he is having, but he's already hacked in a separate amp and LCD, so troubleshooting without further details as to existing modifications may be problematic.

As I said, it is not just the tilt, but exiting setup mode and for rare times when the system glitches out, such as boosting in the water until your boat reaches beyond the top of the screen and the game sort of goes haywire.  So every time I have to go to the rear of the machine and press the button on the board, a major pain.

Nobody would help me with the LCD, so have a new CRT installed now, and have the sound running into a hifi system with lots of bass!  Next thing is to hook up the 4 - Fosgate 6x9s to a 600 watt Fosgate amplifier, it's really going to sound nice!

As for mods, other than the sound, because I'm not using the hunk and want best possible sound quality, the only difference between stock is the switcher and not using the hunk.  I believe I spoke to the designer of the switcher in the past and there were no issues with tilt / resetting the game.  So it has to be the hunk, that 12VAC unregulated has to be going somewhere else besides the sound amps.  I've already tried a second board set and have the same issue.

In my case, the power supply does have to do with why my game is not resetting.
