Title: MDF for Control Panel
Post by: Wolfman5750 on March 15, 2010, 04:27:30 pm
Hi, I'm just about to start my first control panel.  I'm gathering up all the pieces now, but I can't seem to find 5/8 inch MDF anywhere.  I did find 1/2, 1/8, and 3/4 MDF. I also found 5/8in particle board.  Should I use the particle board or should I glue and screw a piece of 1/8 and 1/2 inch MDF together?

Thanks

Well if you plan on covering your control panel with artwork then I would say go for the particle board only because with MDF you will get a smooth finish after very little sanding and painting where as that is harder to achieve that smooth finish with particle board.  Both are a mess to work with especially MDF since it is made of a finer particles.

Also if you plan on making a slot for T-molding you might have problems if you glue two pieces together as well.

Thanks for the reply.  Yeah, I'm planning on adding artwork so particle board it is. I was worried about having enough room for the T-Moulding too.

Well I would be worried where the slot if located and happen to fall near the line where the two pieces join.  I was debating on using particle board in my wireless HAPP fight sticks but glad I didn't because the finish would have been horrible and I probably would have had to cover it with laminate to get the desired finish.

Wouldn't 3/4" inch MDF work the best?  3/4" T-molding is usually what people use to put on thier cabs.  Any reason why you want another size?

Well, I'm going to sandwich artwork between the CP and 1/8in plexi.
